Just got back from the south of France and have to say, Nice is definitely the best place to base yourself - we stayed in a great AirBnB for around 80 euros per night which was much cheaper than the hotels and it had a balcony overlooking the old town. Don't miss Eze Village and Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild - a really incredible pink villa with beautiful gardens. We took the train a lot and have to say, no-one checked our tickets the entire time we were there - the French train companies must lose so much money from fare dodgers. If you're in Nice definitely go to a restaurant called Les Garcons, the set menu was well priced and delicious. Also if you plan to go to Monaco for the day I'd recommend taking the 100 bus there and the train back - don't miss Brasserie de Monaco for Happy Hour where you'll get 2 for 1 beers - the rest of Monaco is extortionately prices.
