Germany Trip report 2026 (Part 1 of 3)

Germany Trip report: 21 July 2026 – 4 Aug 2026 (Part 1 of 3)

Just wanted to add a trip report for our Germany trip for my sons graduation present.
From a big itinerary standpoint
4 adults (me, wife, son and dad).
Hamburg for 2 days, Nuremburg for 5 days and Munich for 4 days.

Day 1 (21 July): Travel day from ATL to FRA. Flew Delta Airlines directly from ATL to FRA. We probably could have gotten cheaper tickets if we wanted to have at least 1 layover somewhere but we figured it wasn’t worth the risk of dealing with connections (either in the US or Europe.

Day 2 (22 July): Arrived in FRA. Got rental vehicle and drove to Munster (Ortze) and stayed the night there. We stayed there based on what we did on the 24 July. Nothing to report. Stayed in Hotel Stadt Munster (http://www.hotel-stadt-munster.de/). Not a bad hotel for the price.

Day 3 (23 July): Went to Hamburg to visit Miniatur Wunderland. Drove from Munster to Buchholz in der Nordheide to catch the RB to downtown Hamburg. Took local transit to Miniatur Wunderland. That place is amazing if you get a chance to go even if you don’t like model trains. The layout and the detail is amazing. Go to youtube and see videos of it. You could spend the entire day there and not see all the details they have in the layout.

After that we decided to do a hop-on, Hop-off bus to get a general tour of the city. To me, Hamburg itself was nothing special.

Day 4 (24 July): went to the Deutsches Panzermuseum Munster (http://www.daspanzermuseum.de/). Going to the museum was the main reason we went to the northern part of Germany as my son has been talking about wanting to go there for several years now. My dad and I also like that type of stuff. Been to tank museums in the states. Seen most of the same things over here but they did have a few tanks I haven’t seen before so that was cool. After that we drove to Nuremburg.

We decided to stay in a small town about 10 miles outside of Nuremburg. We stays at the Hotel Hembacher Hof (http://www.hembacherhof.com/). The reason for this was mainly to save money from staying in downtown Nuremburg. We were fairly close to the RB station so when we went downtown we took that. (we did get group tickets).

Day 5 (25 July): We did some of standard Nuremburg tourist stuff (toy museum, Castle, general walking around.

Day 6 (26 July); Washed clothes, drove around downtown Nuremburg to find locations that my dad remembered when he visited his grandmother in the early 1960’s, Visited Family, ate at Zum Gulden Stern - Die älteste Bratwurstküche der Welt (http://www.bratwurstkueche.de/). Very good food.

Day 7 (27 July): Drove to Obernzenn to see the “Blue & Red Palaces”. Went by Illesheim to see where my dad lived when his dad was in the US Army in the early 1960’s. Went to Bad Windsheim and walked around downtown a hour or so. Went to the Franconian Open Air Museum Bad Windsheim. My dad liked seeing that but I was indifferent. Then drove to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and walked around downtown for a few hours.

Day 8 (28 July): drove to Modlarueth to see museum about the East-West border wall. This was pretty neat so see. I would recommend visiting here if you get a chance. After that we drove to Bamburg and walked around the old town for a few hours.

Day 9 (29 July); Went back to downtown Nuremburg. Visited the Palace of Justice and the Zeppelin parade field. We took transit to all locations.

Thanks for the trip report on Germany, DKW! It sounds like you had a great visit! I liked Hamburg myself, but I was there for several days. I hope your son enjoyed his graduation present. I can't imagine that he didn't!

Also, in case you are interested, when many of us write trip reports, we put anything that doesn't fit in the first thread in the replies below. That way, you don't have to split it up into two parts, which makes it a little more difficult to find. Of course, there's no need to do that here—it's your decision, but I just thought I would mention that in case you wanted to add your second part, which looks pretty short, to this one as a separate reply, then change the title so everyone knows it's just one trip report.

But either way, thanks for writing the report. I love Germany, and I always love reading about it. 😊

Like Mardee, I also enjoy reading about Germany. Thanks for writing about your trip. I visited Mödlareuth a few years back and, like you, found it to be a worthwhile.

I'm still looking to get to Hamburg some day to see Miniatur Wunderland.

Looking forward to reading Part 2 and Part 3!

You have educated me - I thought the oldest sausage kitchen in the world was in Regensburg. Wondering if there are arguments across German dinner tables about this? :)
