Germany: Nov 30 - Dec 12

November 30-Frankfurt: Arrived in Frankfurt terminal 2 at 5:30 pm from a connection in Heathrow. Took the bus to the train station, picked up Euro's at a Deutsche Bank ATM on the recommendation of Ms. Jo. Bought my ticket for the S Bahn train to the main station, upon arrival at the main station walked to the Premiere Inn.

December 1-Frankfurt: Purchased the D-ticket on the MVV app, it starts today, thank you Carol, so all local and regional transport tickets taken care of for the rest of my trip. First stop was the TI office at the Romer to purchase the museum card. Right outside the office was David, from Frankfurt On Foot, for the morning tour. There were a total of 10, including six from California going on a Christmas Market river cruise. It was a brisk 25 degrees and all participants dressed appropriately. After the tour I spent the next three hours at the Stadal museum, that was excellent and empty.

December 2-Frankfurt: Spent the morning at the Jewish Museum. For the afternoon took the S Bahn to Mainz and visited the Gutenberg Museum, afterwards walked around the Christmas Market in Mainz. Canceled my flix bus ticket for tomorrow, since the trains are not on strike.

December 3-Erfurt: Purchased DB trains tickets in advance and traveled to Erfurt. The ICE train was sold out and was glad I made a seat reservation, it was only running 20 minutes behind schedule. Upon arrival dropped my suitcase off at the Prizeotol and walked to Topf & Sons, A Place of Remembrance, was the only person there, and spent over two hours going through an excellent exhibit. The exhibit has no admission charge. Afterwards took the tram to Merchants Bridge, walked to the Christmas Market, and returned to my hotel and checked in around 6 pm. To my delight, the tv had Apple Play, so I logged into my satellite provider via a VPN on my phone and streamed the NFL games to the TV.

December 4-Weimar: Took the Regional Train to Weimar, they scanned my D-ticket and asked for my passport on the way there, but did not check the passport on the return. Visited the fairly new Bauhaus Museum and it was excellent. Since today was Monday, most other attractions were closed, but I had visited them almost 25 years ago on a prior visit to Weimar. Had a late lunch and walked around the Christmas Markets in Weimar. I canceled my flix bus ticket for tomorrow, since the trains are still running.

December 5-Dresden Morning train from Erfurt to Dresden arriving around noon, purchased the Dresden Museum Card at the TI in the train station. I was in Dresden in January 2020 and the Zwinger was closed for renovation and the Historic Green Vault was closed because of the robbery, so they are my must do visits. Walked to the Hyperion Hotel, checked in, walked over to the Zwinger and spent three hours at the Old Masters Gallery, it was excellent. On the way over, walked through a Christmas market and had a wonderful potato soup with a sausage. The museum was buzzing with school groups. Stopped and bought my timed ticket for the Original Green Vault for tomorrow morning.

December 6- Dresden: Walked across the street for my timed entry to the Historic Green Vault, listened to the audio guide, and enjoyed it. You have to go through a decontamination sweep when entering, reminded me of entering Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. Visited the Mathematical and Physical Instruments, and Porcelain Collection at the Zwinger, it was a quick visit for both. Ended the day seeing a fascinating exhibition at the Albertinum titled Revolutionary Romances, that looked at the art world in Dresden under the GDR and the collaborative it had with other communist countries, whose artist came and studied in Dresden. Learned that there is a train strike on Friday, my travel day to Berlin. It looks like I will use one of my backup Flix bus tickets.

I guess I won't be canceling my Flix Bus ticket for Friday from Dresden to Berlin. Third time is a charm in having the extra bus booking. I guess I will ask Deutsche Bahn for a refund for Friday's train ticket.

It sounds like you're having a great trip, with your Flixbus backup planning serving you well. I loved the combination of a Christmas Markets trip plus mornings at great museums like the Stadel in Frankfurt.

Looking forward to reading more about your visit to Dresden and beyond!

December 7 - Dresden/Görlitz: Day trip to Görlitz using the D-ticket. Görlitz is an amazing architecture town, which is why over 100 films have been produced there. Walked around taking in two churches and the Baroque House. Crossed the bridge to Zgorzelec, Poland and had duck for lunch. The Christmas Markets are through out Görlitz, with one having an ice rink and children skating. Returned to Dresden, walked around in the early evening, watched the lighting of the first candle of a huge menorah, with song and dance overlooking the river, walked across the bridge to Neustadt. There are Christmas Markets all over Dresden, large and small, some with themes, and all were busy on Thursday evening. I did not hear one word of English. I did notice an increase in security around the markets.

December 8 - Dresden to Berlin: Today was the train strike, so I used one of my back up Flix Bus tickets. When I realized there was a strike, I went to the Flix Bus app and reserved the front row seat on the upper level of the bus, was glad I had that seat for the view and more leg room. The bus was full and running 30 minutes late, and I selected a bus going to Berlin Central Bus Station, that was closer to Savginyplatz, where I was staying, than some of the other buses that went to the airport and East Berlin. Upon arrival, no S trains, so found a bus to my hotel, Hotel Q. It was a day of travel, longer than planned, but mission accomplished.

Glad my tips about the ATM were helpful. David told me there was someone from the RS forum on the tour that day. Hope you had a good time at the market here and on the tour. Which Jewish museum did you go to?
Looking forward to reading the rest of your trip report.

CWSocial, I have enjoyed reading your trip reports, and have used them for ideas on my own travels. We have had similar travel destinations: Lithuania, Poland, and Germany.

Ms. Jo, I went to the Jewish Museum at the Rothschild Palace. I corrected to David above, my apology on the error. Your posts on this board are helpful, along with your you-tube videos.

Cash vs Card: The majority of my purchases are museum entrances, city cards, coffee and cake in a museum, a card seems preferred over cash, and sometimes only a card, for these types of transactions. My food purchases in the Christmas Markets have all been cash, I just assumed cash only.

D-ticket has made travel on this trip quite easy.

December 7 - Berlin: Went to Sachsenhausen with Original Berlin Walks. It was a good and long tour, over six hours, to/from Berlin. After Sachsenhausen was liberated at the end of WW2, the GDR continued to use it as a prison.

December 8 - Berlin: Visited the Allied Museum and German Resistance Museum. Both were interesting, not busy, and had no admission.

Just ran across your Trip Report. It's excellent. It sounds like you accomplished a lot during your trip. I'm glad you included Erfurt. I think it's a great city, and the Old Town is gorgeous. The Topf and Sons museum is excellent, though a bit depressing. Glad you got to see it.

Ah... Berlin... my favorite city. I like your choice of the Allies Museum and the Resistance Museum. Both of those are great and... as you noted... not very busy.

I have not made it to Dresden yet. I hope to make it there next August.

Nice trip. Is there more to come?

Traveler99:

I will be spending February in Germany and will purchase a D-Ticket for travel What is your Local vs Long Distance train criteria? I am going with no more than 2 local trains (1 transfer) to use the D-Ticket and will purchase an ICE ticket instead if 3 trains (2 transfers) are necessary.

Others feel free to provide your perspectives. I am retired, have from the 3rd to the 26th to travel and have ridden enough local trains to know they can be full or empty depending on the stop, day and time. Also, using local as defined by DB reservation website.
