#11 Consider using an electronic version of travel books, maps, etc. My partner used the Google maps app on his smart phone to avoid us having to carry & use physical maps. (I took the plasticized Vienna map, just in case and we had to use it occasionally, when the smart phone wasn't detailed enough. But it was nice not always to have to unfold it and look so much like a tourist.) We also had my Kindle, onto which I'd loaded Rick's Austria and Italy guide books. This saved having lug around a lot of weight. In addition, the Kindle (compared with the Nook; no, I don't work for Amazon) holds a charge a LONG time -- even though we left it on for most of the day every day -- and it can be read easily in even the brightest sunlight.
