FRANCE: Chamonix in October

I took Rick's advice and decided to go to Chamonix, particularly to ride the Aiguille du Midi. I checked online to confirm it would be open and the site I saw said, "... maintenance is done in November." Alas, maintenance is now... the entire week I am here October 2 until the 20th and "all" lifts are closed. As most hikes begin at a lift, those too are unavailable at this time.

Okay, that said, Chamonix is charming and my little maisonette is cozy. https://www.booking.com/hotel/fr/les-cretes-blanches.html?aid=1910359&label=postbooking_confemail;pbsource=conf_email_hotel_name

There are ten Michelin restaurants - one which I dined at and had THE best braised beef stew ever. The restaurant was welcoming with no pretentiousness. As Rick says, any local wine will suit and indeed it does.

Sure, Chamonix can be "touristy" but as a ski or hiking resort, it is lovely. Be prepared for double the prices of back home - both US and Canada.

I also want to mention I am a solo female traveler. I've been in France since September 18 and it has been a joy. I did manage to obtain my "Pass Sanitaire" three days before my departure to France (I had applied to the French government August 18). I STRONGLY recommend getting the pass and putting the QR on your iPhone. I have been asked for it 90% of the time and restaurants are enforcing the requirement along with masks (in stores as well and transit). It is a relief to sit in an area knowing others have been double-vaccinated.

I have more to do. On to Strasbourg soon! Keep on travel'in!

beverly, I can’t thank you enough for your post. We were planning to be in Chamonix (we’ve been there twice before) from 10/21 to 10/23 and never thought to check if the cable cars/lifts would be open. I’m just wondering if 10/21 is risky in case they don’t finish doing maintenance by the 20th. Aargh.

Sorry that the lifts aren’t running while you’re there. Have you identified routes lower down, that won’t need a mechanical boost? Any advice from the local TI tourism info office?

TI provided three hikes along the river and is "flat". I did exploratory walks along the valley though. Just wasn't a good time of year. My bad luck.

It’s unfortunate that you couldn’t go up to Aiguille du Midi...

Hopefully the rest of your trip will be wonderful.
Looking forward to reading about your adventures in Strasbourg!
