Florence - Duomo Museum

We were extremely disappointed upon our arrival in Florence to find the Duomo Museum closed until Nov., 2015. To our minds, it is the best of the Florence museums, if only for its lack of crowds. The Donatello Magdalena and the Michelangelo Pieta are both stunning and alone would be worth the trip.

Larry, the Bargello is also an excellent museum, and was relatively free of crowds in May.
Museo San Marco is also a not-to-be-missed, and was blissfuly quiet.

I thought the Pieta was housed in St Peter's Basilica? It's one of the things I am so looking forward to on our 21 day RS tour next spring!

There are several pietas by Michelangelos. The one that we are the most familiar with is in St. Peter's.

I realize that most people recognize the pieta in St. Peter's as "the Pieta", however it is only one of several sculpted by Michelangelo. It was created during his late twenties or early thirties and is indeed beautiful. That found in the Duomo Museum of Florence was sculpted in his eighties and I find something strangely affecting about its rougher texture and almost gothic style, as well as his self portrait as Joseph of Arimathea.
