First Trip to Europe 2014

Hello, this report is a couple of years late but I thought I'd get to it before our families next trip. Also, I want to thank everyone that on here who made our trip enjoyable with their great information. Thanks again.

So our first trip to Europe was in 2014 from Sept. 24 to Oct. 14. We traveled to London, Paris, Florence, Venice, and Rome. We also did day trips to Stonehenge-Bath-Windsor, Versailles, Pisa, and Pompeii-Naples. Like many first time visitors to Europe, you never know when and if you will go back so, oh course, we wanted to see as much as possible. Yes, it can be done but as many have said on here, it makes for long days and there where a few.

OK, our first stop was in London where we arrived at 8 in the morning. I myself had no issues with jet lag but I didn't take into account how it would affect my wife, our 2 daughters, and my mom. They handled it well up until about 4, then they called it a day. After being allowed to check into our flat and dropping off our luggage, we headed to the Tower of London. I had purchased tickets in advance so getting in was no problem and the first thing we did was to see the Crown Jewels. Lucky for us, the crowds where not that bad and we where able to see everything with no real issues of lines. Afterward, we headed to St. Paul's where I had also purchased tickets in advance. At this time, it was about 1330 and we stayed until 1500 when sleepyness hit my family. We ended up going back to the flat where they took a nap and I went to the grocery store to pick up some supplies. The rest of the day was spent in the flat relaxing and as for my family, sleeping. The next day we saw the Changing of the Guard which was neat to watch. Then we went to Westminster Abbey and afterward, had lunch. We then headed to the British Library, and walked around for a while before ending our day at the British Museum. That was a long day. Saturday we took an Evans & Evans tour to Windsor-Stonehenge-Bath. We enjoyed the tour but you do feel rushed, and really its a type of tour for those with limited time that want to see a late. It was a good tour but once was good enough for our family, next time we'll visit on our own. Our last day was spend at the Harry Potter Studios. This is a definite for any Potter fan but this did cut into our time in London unfortunately. As you can see, we really didn't get a good taste of London so on our next trip, we are definitely taking our time and spending a lot more time in London.

Our next stop was Paris. On our first day after checking in, we saw Notre Dame, the Orsay Museum, and we walked around the French Quarter. It was a full day but we did get to enjoy everything at a nice pace. On our second day, we went to Pere Lachaise Cemetery in the morning, had a picnic lunch, visited the Louvre, and just got lost in Paris. We didn't see all of the Louvre, just the top sites and some of our other areas we where interested in. Of course, you really need a whole day to see everything there, maybe even more than a day. Our last day in Paris was spend getting lost and visiting the Eiffel Tower. I really feel in love with Paris but it will have to wait until after our next trip since it's not in the itinerary this time. On our last day in France, we visited Versailles on our own. We arrived early as many on here suggested and Rick Steves and had no problem seeing everything inside and enjoying the gardens. We ended the day at Marie Antoinette's cottage and headed back to Paris for our night train to Florence. For me, the night train was fun but as for my family, it's something they said they will never do again, lol, I guess some people just can't sleep on trains.

We arrived in Florence at 9 and our host was kind enough to allow us to check into our apartment early. After getting settled, we purchased our Florence pass and visited the Brunelleschi's Dome, the Accademia, and the enjoyed the rest of the day just wondering around. On our second day, we visited the Uffizi, the Pitti Palace, and the San Marco Museum. It was a full day but we did have time to wonder some more and do some shopping which my mom really enjoyed. This is definitely a city that I wish we could have spent more time in but only had the 2 days. On our last day, we visited Pisa which we loved. We did the walk that Rick recommends in his book and we got to see the major sites. Then it was off to Venice.

We arrived in Venice about 1900, and checked into our apartment. We then just walked around Venice getting lost on the quiet streets until about 2200. Our first full day in Venice was spent at St. Marks Basilica, where we did was Rick recommended and checked our day bags so that we could bypass the line. That was great and saved us a lot of time. After, we had lunch in St. Marks Plaza, yes, it was expensive but we had been saving money making our own breakfast and lunches so it wasn't a big deal. Not the best food but the atmosphere was great. We then went to the Doge's Palace, and after spent the rest of the day getting lost. On our last day, we visited Burano, did some shopping, and really took in the city.

Our next stop was Rome, and with the most amount of time there than any other city, we really did get to see and do a lot. We arrived in Rome at 13, and after checking in, we did the walk that Rick recommended in his book, I believe it was the old city walk. Every thing was great and we got to see a lot, the only thing was that the Travis Fountain was being repaired so I guess that gives us another reason to go back. We also walked around by the Colosseum. The next day we visited the Colosseum and took the underground tour. My daughters and I really enjoyed this tour and I definitely recommend it to anyone who is a history buff. Afterward, we made our way to Forum and Palatine Hill where we ended our day. On our third day we visited 2 museums, and yes, we did use the Roma pass so it was worth it. We also visited the Pantheon that day which I really loved. Just marveling at the work the ancient Romans did was amazing. The next day we headed to Pompeii and Naples. We spend half the day at Pompeii and the other half in Naples where we bought a pizza at the oldest pizza place in the city. It was very good I might add. On our 2nd to last day, we visited Vatican Museum and luckily, had purchased our tickets in advance because of all the places we had visited, this was by far the longest line we had ever seen. After seeing the museum, we checked out the Basilica, and all I have to say is WOW, huge and amazing. My wife, mom, and one of my daughters where tired out by the end of our tour but my other daughter and I still have energy to head to the top of the Basilica for some amazing views. Our last day was spend shopping, and just wondering around, we also visited the Jewish Quarter which had some beautiful charm.

That was our first trip and with our second one coming up in Sept. although we did see a lot, we are definitely slowing down this time and really just pacing ourselves. It's like so many said on here including Rick, always think that you'll be back.

Thanks again everyone for all the help on here and next time I wont wait as long to post my report.

Glad you had such a good trip and saw so much in so little time. Glad you realized that sometimes slower is better, too. I'm sort of a "sightsee till you drop" traveler like you, luckily my wife is slower-paced and she keeps me in check, therefore the trips are sustainable. I hope your next trip is more leisurely and equally, or more, rewarding.

Nice report. I too was in Paris & Italy in Oct 2014 & was upset the Trevi Fountain was under repair as well as the main window of St. Chapelle in Paris. Where is your next trip?

Nice report, enjoyed reading it. You have a good memory for details. Next time in Paris, I want to go to Pere Lachaise Cemetery. And, in London, it sounds like you saw a lot, as well going out to Bath and environs.
I would like to post a trip report for my 2 previous Rick Steves tours and you have given me courage to attempt it. I would like to before my next trip.
Thanks for sharing.

Dick you are exactly right, I believe you really do see a lot doing a lot but like you, my wife is usually the one telling me to slow down.

Brushtim, for our next trip, we have London again, although it's 5 full days this time, we may do a day trip to Windsor on our own this time. And we are definitely doing a lot more of just exploring and walking around. Then it Edinburgh for 3.5 days, then Munich for 4 days with a day trip to Neuschwanstein on our own. My daughters want to do a day trip to Salzburg, although that's still up in the air. Depends how we're feeling. And our last stop is Barcelona for 3.5 days.

Judy, thank you. You should really post your trip report, it's always great to read about others people's trip and get advice from them. It also helps to give people ideas as well.

Raymond, consider going to Hampton Court Palace when you're in London... It is amazing. Where Henry VIII and Elizabeth I lived, so much history there. It's also in a beautiful setting next to the Thames river.

Hi Susan, I will definitely talk to my family about going. We're looking at having more of an open schedule this time.
