Family Trip Report - London, Paris & Amsterdam LONDON DAY 7

Day 7 7/7

Our daughter wanted to see as much of London as she could in 1 day. I thought the best way to do this would be some kind of tour. We ended up booking City Wonders "Full Day Walking Tour". It ran from 8:15 am to 5:15 pm. We had to meet at the ticket office at the Tower of London at 8:00 am. We were out of the apartment by 7:00 am & heading to the Tube station. We had purchased 7 day Oyster cards for the 3 of us & an Oyster card for daughter, putting 10 pounds on it. She only needed 3 Tube rides & I thought this would be enough. We did have a problem when exiting at the Tower Hill Tube Station - the card readers weren't working. The staff was just telling people to go on thru. I knew this would be a problem for our daughter's card & now she would be charged fare to the farthest point on the Tube line. We didn't want to be late for the tour, so figured we'd deal with it on our way back or just put more money on the card if we had to.

We met our guide, Josh, at the ticket window. There were maybe 20 or so people on our tour. The group was actually larger, but had been split among 2 guides. Josh was a Londoner, very personable and funny. There turned out to be another family from our Western New York area on the tour & the mom had gone to the same high school as me, although several years later so we didn't know each other. We can usually find some kind of Buffalo connection wherever we go!

The tour started w/early entry to the Tower of London. Josh took us in, while giving us info about the Tower on the way (we all had headsets). We saw the opening ceremony where the Yeoman Warders march with the keys to officially open the gate. We were then told we should head directly to the Crown Jewels. How nice to see them without the massive crowds! We could take our time. We then had free time to look around the Tower, but only about an hour, I think. This was why we had gone to the Tower earlier in the week. I knew an hour wouldn't be enough time for my husband & me, but it was plenty for our daughter. We went on a speedy visit to the White Tower & visited the torture room (at daughter's request!). We made it to the meeting point outside the exit gate with some time to spare. Josh took pictures of the 4 of us with Tower Bridge in the background.

Day 7 7/7 continued:

Next on our tour was a Thames River boat cruise. It was fun to see all the sights from the River along with Josh's commentary thru our headsets. After exiting the cruise, we made our way to the Horse Guards Parade Grounds, with Josh giving us info along the way about the things we passed. We arrived at the Parade Grounds & after a short wait followed behind the Horse Guards on their route to Buckingham Palace. Instead of following them all the way to the Palace, we took a right and headed to the area where the band starts from. We had a great place along the curb to watch and listen to the band as they headed toward the Palace. Next we followed the band toward the Palace, but did not go all the way to the gates for the actual ceremony. We stayed in the gardens in front of the Palace for pictures & more of Josh's funny commentary.

At this point the tour broke for lunch on our own (about 2 hours). Some people had only booked the morning 1/2 of the tour & left now. A few others would join the tour just for the afternoon portion. Our meeting point after lunch would be the Duke of York column. We headed up towards Piccadilly, looking for a good lunch spot on the way. Most of the restaurants seemed pretty expensive, so we kept walking. We happened upon Fortnum & Mason, beautiful window displays (Alice in Wonderland). We all went in to look around & marvel at the various items (& the prices!). My daughter wanted to find some honey & a honey stick (not sure of the actual name) for her boyfriend who drinks a lot of tea. She found some honey, but the sticks were way more than she wanted to pay. At this point we really needed to get some lunch before all of our time was up. We kept walking & finally came upon a Pizza Hut with a buffet lunch offering. Another bad lunch choice! We seem to make a habit of that. Nothing much to say about the lunch except don't go there, don't make our mistake!

We made it to the Duke of York column with time to spare. Once everyone was there, we headed to Trafalgar Square, then down Whitehall with lots of info from Josh on the way. We passed by Downing St. & peeked thru the fence at No. 21. Had a great photo-op in front of a red London phone box with Big Ben in the background. Next was over to Westminster Abbey for pictures & information. This tour did not include going inside Westminster (I had promised less churches this time), so we will go inside when we come back to London.

Now the highlight of the afternoon - a real English tea at the St. Ermin's Hotel. What a pretty place, both inside & out! We were taken to an outside patio that overlooked the front entrance & gardens. Each family group had their own table. It was so nice to sit in the shade and relax. The morning had started out cool & cloudy, but became hot & sunny. We picked out 2 teas for the table - Earl Gray & another with lovely spices. The waitress was very helpful in explaining the different teas & helping us decide. The food was from a set menu, we were brought 3 different kinds of sandwiches & 4 different kinds of sweets. Plenty of food for all of us! We loved the teas & the food! My dad was tea drinker & the tea brought back wonderful memories of him. Our guide left us at this point, but we were told we could stay as long as we wanted for tea. Josh was a great guide! We felt this tour was perfect for our daughter's only day in London. I would recommend it for anyone who has a short time & wants to pack a lot in.

We stayed for a while but were very tired & ready to head back to the apartment. We headed toward the Tube station & found something exciting (for us!). We happened upon New Scotland Yard! My husband & I watch all the British mysteries and we were excited to pass by here. My husband wanted to take a picture of the sign, but there were 2 armed policemen standing right next to it. I told him to check w/the policemen before taking the picture. Didn't want to get in trouble! He asked and they said sure & he could take their picture too! My daughter ran over to get in the picture, so we have some fun pictures for our album!

Day 7 7/7 continued:

We got off the Tube at S. Kensington when my daughter announced that she wanted to go to Harrods. Would have been nice to know that the stop before which was right near Harrods! In her defense, she no idea there was a stop there, just that it was close to our apartment. She had hopes of buying a dress or shoes there as a souvenir - ha! The 4 of us walked to Harrods, 1st checking out the food hall - amazing! After that we split up, husband & son going to the electronics dept. (then home to start laundry), daughter & I looking at clothes & shoes. After she saw the prices, she quickly decided there was nothing she could afford. We saw so many people loaded down w/Harrod's shopping bags - at those prices? We also had fun looking in the Millionaire's area at all the cool items + the toy department. So many cute things, I'm glad I wasn't there with a small child!

Daughter decided that she was hungry now and wanted to try fish & chips before leaving London. We texted husband & son that we would meet them at the pub around the corner from the apartment for dinner. We met up there, husband & I still full from tea, kids, of course, hungry. Kids ordered fish & chips and something else, maybe macaroni & cheese, to share. Husband & I just drinks & finishing whatever the kids didn't eat.

After that it was back to the apartment to finish up the laundry. We wanted to be sure we had enough clean clothes for Paris, we wouldn't have a washer again until Amsterdam. We packed & cleaned up the apartment. Got to bed quite late even though we had an early start to Paris the next day.

Thoughts on London:

We loved it! So easy to get around either by Tube or walking. Everyone we met very helpful. Can't wait to come back. So much that we didn't get to do.
