Family Trip Report - London, Paris & Amsterdam - AMSTERDAY DAY 2

Amsterdam Day 2 7/15

Through TripAdvisor, I found a company called Hungry Birds that got great reviews. I booked their food tour 9:30 to 1:30. The meeting point was in the DePijp neighborhood, near the large outdoor market. The tram didn't seem to easily go from our apartment to the meeting point & Joanna had assured us that we could walk, although it was about 40 minutes. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for a walk. We found our meeting point & found our tour mates right away - a couple & group of 3, all from Germany. Our guide, Rachel, showed up a few minutes later. Rachel had immigrated from either Indonesia or Singapore, I think (sorry, Rachel, can't remember!) a few years ago & now makes her home in Amsterdam.

Rachel quickly led us to the first stop - a yogurt bar, with pastries, coffee, etc. Our group was set up in a cute lower room & the eating began! We were brought fresh yogurt topped with fruit, nuts & honey. Waters flavored with fruit were already on the table & we could order tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Kids & I ordered the hot chocolate. What fun! It came as a big glass of very hot milk, topped with a small glass dish filled with chopped chocolate. You mixed the chocolate in & made your own hot chocolate. Very tasty! We were also offered some kind of fruit/nut bread. We all relaxed and go to know each other a little bit.

We moved on to the outdoor market. Looking at my pictures, it appears that we stopped at the herring stand next. Rachel got us lots of raw herring - both whole with the tails & smaller cut up pieces. For myself & the kids, that didn't want the raw fish, she got fried fish bites (kibbeling?) with 3 types of dip & a huge plate of fries. Husband tried the herring, but it was not his thing! We gave our portions to our tour mates & they ate every bite! We also shared the fried fish & fries as Rachel had gotten a ton.

At this point, we were already getting full and it was only the 2nd stop! Next up was poffertjies (like small pancakes covered with butter & powdered sugar). We watched the talented man at the stand quickly make them & we were each given a good size serving. These were delicious! Then on to the stroopwaffles! I had been looking forward to trying these as I love anything with caramel. They were very sweet, but good.

We had a little walk to our next stop, so Rachel gave us some history of the neighborhood. She also made it a point during the tour to talk to each group & get to know us a little bit. We were glad of the walk to try to get hungry for the next stop. Next up was some Indonesian food. She took us to a little antique shop, set up in the back was a dining table set with pretty dishes & our meal ready and waiting for us. The owners of the shop also have a little restaurant, which was being renovated right now. In the meantime, they still hosted the Hungry Birds, but in their antique shop. There was so much food! Chicken satay, rice, fresh vegetable salads & other things I can't even remember right now. All very good. We ate as much as we could, but were still so full from the earlier stops.

Next Rachel took us to a small grocery store. This place had all the foods that Americans living overseas might crave. It was fun to see all the snack foods, cereals, condiments, etc. that we have at home. They also had Asian prepared foods. We were given some kind of spicy sandwich. Too hot for my taste!

Amsterdam Day 2 7/15 continued:

A few more stops left on this tour! We next visited an Asian market, with a chance to look around at all the different items they had for sale. Rachel had us try some sort of empanada like sandwich (very good!) and a layered cake-like dessert that tasted just like pumpkin pie. Would have liked to have eaten more of each, but getting so full!

Next stop was a chain restaurant called Febo, an automat with fried Dutch foods behind little glass doors. Rachel gave us each euros to purchase whatever we wanted to try. My family each got different things & shared. The kids still talk about the fried gravy balls!

Last stop was a bar - Rachel brought out small glasses of jenever (gin made from juniper berries) and very large glasses of Heineken to wash it down. Daughter & I tried the jenever & washed it down with a little beer. Wow! A little was enough for us! Husband & son stuck to water. We all sat for a while, just chatting, too full to move. We barely touched our beers & our tour mates happily finished them off for us.

I will say that this tour was very good value for the money. We couldn't eat any more if we tried. Rachel was a great guide and lots of fun. She also leads a "Thirsty Birds" tour, visiting bars & trying various drinks. I don't know how she has anyone still standing at the end of that tour!

We said goodbye to our tour mates & Rachel. Husband & son were off on a mission to buy son new headphones. His had stopped working on the train to Amsterdam & he needed new ones for the flight home. Our Airbnb hostess had given us some addresses of shops that should have headphones. Husband put the addresses in his phone & off they went. Daughter & I wanted to go back to the DePijp outdoor market to look around some more.

Daughter & I looked around, she tried on some clothes, but we only ended up buying some small souvenirs. I think we could have spent lots more time here, but we were so full & tired. I would come here again if we come back to Amsterdam someday. After a while, we'd had enough shopping & started the long walk back to the apartment. Daughter stopped in a coffee shop on our way back. As you can imagine, we don't have anything like this at home. She ended up buying a container of marijuana cookies. I was not too happy about this, but she is 21. The container was quite large & I stressed to her that these could not come back with us! She tried one later on & said they tasted like what she imagined dry fish food would taste like! The rest of the cookies went into the garbage. We slowly made our way back to the apartment, passing the Anne Frank house again.

I texted husband when we were getting close to the apartment. We had only taken one set of keys with us today assuming we would stay together. Gave the keys to husband, expecting them to arrive back first as the stores they were going to were near the apartment. He texted back that they had gotten lost. He put a similar address in his phone & went in the opposite direction. They ended up near Vondelpark, so they got to see a little of the park before heading in the right direction & buying the headphones.

We spent the next few hours napping. Went back out for dinner much later that evening, I think ending up at a small crepe place. Walked around some more then back to the apartment. Tomorrow is the last day of our trip! So much planning, then it seems to go by so fast!

Tina- I have loved reading your trip reports! They bring back good memories and have given me some great ideas for the future. I particularly appreciate how you travel with your teenage son. The next time we go to Europe, my oldest will be a teen and I value the insights you have given me. ( 1st- the kids don't always have to come along on every planned excursion. 2nd - always have serious snacks at hand or know of a place to eat at all times!) We will definitely do some food tours when we go back, in part because of your excellent descriptions. Wonderful posts and great memories. Kristin

Hi Kristin:

Thank you! We had a great trip, although not perfect. Traveling with teenagers can be hard. But I think downtime & lots of food are key! Food tours are great because kids can try tastes of so many different foods without committing to ordering an entire meal. My son can't wait to eat at an Indian restaurant at home now that he's tried the food in London. I would have liked to have done/seen a few more things in each city, but knew that we would need a little relaxing time each day. Also, as you say, sometimes doing things separately is good too! I hope you enjoy your next trip & can't wait to read about it in a trip report :). I have read your trip reports & am very impressed with how good your kids were on your recent trip. I would have been just like them had I been able to go to Europe at their ages - I would not have wanted to leave the museums!

We have a beach vacation with friends planned for next year, then an Alaskan cruise/land trip, so we will not be back to Europe until 2019, I think, after son's high school graduation. Seems so far away, but also too close! Until then I'll be reading the trip reports and dreaming of the next trip!

I have really enjoyed following along on your trip. It makes passing the time till my next trip pass, at least that is the excuse I use for devouring forum posts! I plan on taking that London food tour. It sounds like a terrific way to sample things I might be hesitant to try on my own. After all, one bite is easier to take than a whole plate.

Hi Debra:

You'll love the food tour in London! I'm back to reading trip reports too. We have no idea where we want to go on our next trip to Europe, so this is also the fun part for me - all the planning and all the possibilities!
