Enoteca Cangrande in Verona

Celebrated a terrific trip to Verona with our last meal at Enoteca Cangrande. Overall it was fine, but not worth repeating - and certainly at the cost. Travelers may want to be aware of a few things. The tasting menu is no longer 40 euro, but 60. The 50% hike pushed a dinner for two with wine to over 185 euro, not including tip. For that kind of money, the entire experience should be phenomenal. The environment is lovely, even for sitting outside. Only one wine (a white) was offered by the glass and when asked for a suggestion for a lighter local red, the sommelier brought us a very good, but overpowering (14.5%) bottle costing 53 euro. Food was imaginative and painstakingly prepared, but the pasta dishes were extremely rich and over salted to the point that one was just inedible. Mention of this to our waiter seemed to disappoint him, though it wasn’t clear whether he was disappointed with the chef or us - and the dish was not remade. Portions were also modest enough that an after dinner snack down the street was in order. Simone was an enthusiastic host, if perhaps a little stern in his unrelenting corrections of our not all bad Italian. Next time we will opt for a repeat meal at the convivial, excellent, and reasonable Osteria al Duca.
