We flew into Munich, via London, from the USA and spent the first night of our trip in Dachau. Dachau is close enough to the airport to be convenient after a long travel day but still feels like “village Germany.” The hotel and our stay were pleasant and relaxing after a hectic travel day.
The altstadt was very pleasant and picturesque with a good variety of restaurants.
We toured the Dachau Camp Memorial the next morning before heading to Salzburg. This memorial should be a must-see for anyone visiting the area. It’s very sobering yet it’s very well presented. I highly recommend a 2-3 hour stop.
If visiting Munich and looking for quieter surroundings, I think Dachau is a really good alternative as it has pretty good S-bahn connections into the city.
