Beyond Europe: trip report South Africa

I’m just finishing up my trip in South Africa which I have really enjoyed. For me the highlights have been beautiful summer weather in January and animal viewing.

I flew Turkish Airlines Seattle to Istanbul. In this particular airplane, if you purchase extra legroom economy you end up with a premium economy seat with no extra perks. Then it was Turkish Airlines Istanbul to Cape Town. Flying time was 22 hours total. If you realize I traveled across three continents and the Atlantic that time is not unreasonable. I didn’t take advantage of their program, but I could have broken up the two flights with Turkish Airlines free layover program. Best of all, the price was very reasonable, $1200 roundtrip Seattle to Cape Town.

I arrived in Cape Town and just rested the first afternoon/evening. Hotel prices are very reasonable with nice hotels running $80-$120 a night.

Table Mountain was my goal the next morning. Uber rides are plentiful and inexpensive. $5 Uber and $23 roundtrip cable car ride and I was at the top with the most amazing views in every direction. Table Mountain is actually a National Park and many trails of varying difficulty are available as well as a gift shop restaurant.

I boarded my home for the next 12 nights, the Azamara Quest, as it began its South African Intensive Voyage. My excursions included 3 Safari days and a Penguin/dolphin sightseeing cruise. We had enrichment speakers on board for history, culture, and animals/ecosystem. We also experienced several cultural immersion events which included traditional singers/dancers. I totally enjoyed my cruise on this small ship (591 passengers) and we did not encounter a lot of other cruise ships on our journey.

In Summary, South Africa is a great destination. Airfare to Africa is often not more expensive then some flights to Europe. Safari opportunities abound and it is quite thrilling have experiences such as driving through the bush, turn and find a herd of elephants walking to a watering hole.
The weather was usually in the 70-80 degree range.

I always tell people that there is nothing like Africa especially for the wildlife. The safaris can be expensive but so worthwhile.

Do they still have the cable care/gondola going up Table Mountain that rotates 360 degrees as it climbs so you see all sides? Only place in the world I've got to experience that. When we did this, we decided to walk down - it was a steep 3,000 descent with very large steps but gave us a different perspective.

Waiting to hear more details on your trip

Wonderful! Cape Town is astoundingly gorgeous! We have done 2 safari’s in Africa. Next time, we are just going to rent a car and drive around. Animals are everywhere!

What a great experience! Yes would love to hear more details. Would you be willing to tell us what the cruise cost was? Was it extra for your excursions? How would you rate the cruise line vs others you’ve taken?

Thanks Carol,
I am going next November, meeting a small group for a tour of the country.
I am wondering if you were happy with your Turkish airline flight? I couldn’t tell from your report.
I have never flown this far and it’s a bit intimidating!
Any insights would be appreciated
Thanks so much,
Eva

To answer a few questions:
Cruise cost 12 night Azamara SouthAfrica Intensive Voyage. $2800 for ocean view cabin, no solo supplement charged. I also received $1000 in onboard credit which I used to pay for my excursions. Azamara includes everything including tips in its base fare except high end drinks and internet. This trip was extremely well priced which is why I pounced on the opportunity! I love Azamara due to its small ship size and destination focus.

Turkish airlines. I have flown them in business and extra legroom economy and been pleased in both cases. They provide good service and their catering in all classes is above your average airline food. They have some great free programs if you have a longish layover in Istanbul. They will either take you for a free bus tour or put you up overnight in a hotel and give bus tour.

I really appreciate all the detailed info, Carol. It’s so helpful when looking at all the many cruise lines. Azamara sounds great!
