B&B Hotel in Edinburgh

We just completed a wonderful trip in Scotland, ending in Edinburgh and a stay at this hotel. We are very fit and have no issues with mobility. This was our 12th RS tour. Accordingly, we are very familiar and accept that each tour may offer accommodations that are heavy on "character". Without doubt, this was the worst accommodations we have ever had on any of our tours. We are not picky; however, basic sanitation (like safety) is non-negotiable. The water pressure for most of the travelers in our group was insufficient with a very common complaint that the toilets did not flush fully. I would recommend that Steves stop using this hotel as it isn't acceptable.

Did you put this assessment in your tour review? If you haven't gotten the evaluation request yet, you will and you should be sure to fill it out. It's a shame about the hotel because it looks nice on the website.

I double checked the date of your post because I believe a similar thread about this specific tour hotel was active earlier this summer. Apparently people have been complaining about this particular hotel for quite some time, but RS continues to book its tours there. The plumbing issues have come up repeatedly. People get vague responses from the RS office when they lodge complaints (along the lines of “most people like it.”) Clearly there is an ongoing problem with this hotel. I cannot understand why they wouldn’t address it if they cared about their long term customers (people like you who have taken 12 tours) and paid attention to the fact you’ve never complained about any tour hotels in the past.

We took our 3rd RS tour this summer. Had no issues whatsoever with hotel rooms on the first two tours (some definitely quirky) but this time some of the rooms crossed over from “unique and quirky” to “dark, musty, and unpleasant.” Our worst room was in a location where the best rooms were multi room suites in a carriage house. We’re pretty sure we ended up in the former maid’s quarters. I’m not sure we’ll sign up for a 4th tour. We noted this in our tour review. There’s so much I enjoy about the RS Tours but they don’t seem to care about people’s experiences in the hotels anymore, which is a shame.

Also disappointed with this hotel at the end of our RS Tour in October 2022. I think the mold in the ceiling of the shower triggered my allergies (toilet issues as well) and I was miserable the 2 nights we stayed there. Thought I was getting sick but as soon as we moved on to York (on our own) I got better. Also put my comments in my evaluation of the tour to RS office.

Way back, I got the impression that RS had long-standing valued relationship's with some hotel owners, so were rather biased in the owners' favor, therefore not as critical as perhaps they should have been. Some of these owners did not keep their properties updated over time. This is only my opinion and experience from two RS tours before Covid. The one hotel in Rome, which I will not name, was one of the most uncomfortable properties I'd ever attempted to sleep in. The bed was hard and the "sheets" thin, and we had to unplug the only lamp to charge our phones. The other Italy hotels were fine, and the Swiss hotels were great. There is so much that is exceptional about the RS tours, but I do think that the lodging can possibly be a weakness. Most RS travelers would rather pay a bit more for more comfortable lodging, again IMHO.

This is perplexing, I provided very similar post tour feedback years ago and posted comments to this forum last year. As a tour alumni public service, I just e mailed the RS Tour office pointing them to the various forum feedback on this property.

I'm not sure, but it seems to me this property perhaps changed ownership several years ago. If so, that could account for the decline. When we stayed there five or six years ago, it was fine.
