Or have a few days in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Base yourself in Zwolle or Deventer, rent a bicycle at the railway station and make some relaxed day trips.
Or take the train to Hamburg or Lübeck and explore northern Germany.

Doing a Bike and Barge from Bruges to Amsterdam

How much time are you spending in Belgium on this trip, and what's your route from Bruges to The Netherlands? Depending on, you might want to put a few days on the front end and a few on the back end to take in a little more of both countries.

We are going to Bruges early and spend a few extra days and we are staying after the bike trip in Amsterdam a few days.
Then we would like to go to a new area. Thanks for all your suggestions!

Hamburg, Germany looks interesting in one of RS's new shows. I've never been but I would look into it if I had 5 days available after Amsterdam. It's 5 hours away by rail. And, of course, Paris is 3 hours away from Amsterdam.

I would love to hear more about the bike and barge. Are you using a company or did you organize it yourself? How can I get started looking into something like that? My trip is already booked this year but 2018 ...

Our ski club is putting on the bike and barge.....out of Florida.
I am pretty sure this is the company they are using. The boat holds 26 people....all meals included.

Our trip leader went on one last year (different route). She loved her particular guide and asked his favorite route. Bruges to Amsterdam was his choice.

Oh, We loved our bike and barge tour in the Netherlands. It is a beautiful country. I'm sure you will love this adventure. As far as where you should go next, it is hard to say without knowing where you have been and what you like. Did you think of taking an additional bike and barge tour...we were with several people who combined two tours. But, if all things are open, I would either take the train to Paris or London...or take the ferry to Hull and pop over to York and then down to London to fly out. OR...take the ferry to Hull, slow but surely a somewhat nostalgic trip and do some walks in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

PS. We went on Cycle Tours mentioned above. They are a Netherlands company. If you skip any intermediary, it is less expensive (not talking about your bike club as they probably did exactly that). I will say we had some people who considered them selves "bicyclists" and they missed everything. In other words, make sure you stop or go slower and smell the roses, so to speak.

Like Wray, my thoughts went to the UK. Look into flights from A'dam to London City Airport. That may be faster and easier than the train. There is so much to see and do in London and way too many good day trips for a single week.

Or fly to Budapest, then train to Vienna. Both are great cities, split your time. Vienna is usually easier for open-jaw flights. That's if you have a week, but not a great idea with only 5 days.

You could take a short train ride down to the areas along the Rhine & Mozel Rivers around Bacharach.
