Alps My Way Report - July 2025

My wife and I just returned from an amazing two weeks on the Alpine My Way tour for our anniversary. The hands off pace of the tour was perfect for us, James was our wonderful tour leader, and we had the most pleasant and interesting tour mates - we really ended up feeling like a family by the end of the week.

Salzburg: We arrive a day early which is recommended, which also gave us our only sunny day there. We took Bob's Tours' combination SOM and Hallstatt excursion, and really appreciated the small group size and personalized attention from our tour guide, who even dropped us off at our respective hotels since it was raining. Hallstatt is gorgeous but absolutely packed with tour groups, more than any other town we visited. In Salzburg don't miss the daily noon organ recital at the Salzburg Dom (cathedral), during which a guest organist played on 5 of the 7 organs! We had two days of off and on rain but pleasant temps.

Dolomites: We drove south into Italy to the colorful city of Bolzano, which exceeded my expectations as a picturesque, walkable, and very pleasant city with the best food on the trip. Our hotel was right on the main piazza and we were serenaded by a calypso band outside our window one evening that had folks dancing in the street! We rode the local bus 45 minutes through jaw dropping valleys to the Suisi Alm gondola lift that took us up to the stunning Alpe du Suisi for a perfect hiking day.

Germany: Leaving Bolzano we drove due north to Fussen, stopping at the Zugspitze on a sunny day. The views on top were the best of the trip, though especially the German side was packed. Continuing on to Fussen I was again pleasantly surprised by the town, which is sold as just a convenient place to stay for the castles. Be sure and explore the town as well as Newschuanstein. Both castles are stunning of course, and I was pleasantly surprised by the detail of both tours.

Switzerland: What can I say. Magical, unreal, beyond our wildest dreams! We stayed at the historic Staubbach hotel with a balcony view of the waterfall. Getting around the valley was easy. (though food, gondolas and trains were pricey)

Chamonix: Very charming town, if a bit more commercialized than the others. We did both the Aguille du Midi and Brevent lifts, and the Mer de Glace. All were spectacular - and if it's a cloudy day atop the Midi just wait for the clouds to part. The day we went it was cloudy in the valley but sunny on top.

The bus transportation was perfect. Lots of room to spread out, and the rest stops were all clean, modern, well stocked, and far beyond any gas station stops we're used to back home. Typically restrooms require a Euro or Franc, but you get a ticket back that can be refunded with a purchase. James provided basic information at each stop, as well as a short orientation at each town, but for the most part his role was to answer questions and provide advise and he had "office hours" each morning. All in all, it was a great way for us to celebrate our anniversary.

Thank you for your report. I'd hope that 1 of the 2 days at each stop would provide good viewing weather.

I took this tour with two friends in September 2024. It was fabulous and just as you described. Thanks for the memories and so happy you enjoyed it. Regina

Thanks for the report! I’m signed up for this tour next Sept. It will be my first RS tour.

I really want to see Hallstatt, even though I know it will be crowded. I’m trying to decide between the Bob's Tours' combination SOM and Hallstatt excursion or the Bob’s Tour that just goes to Hallstatt. So, my question for you is this: Did you like the SOM sights on the tour or wish you had more time in Hallstatt?

I'm so glad you enjoyed the My Way Alpine tour!

We love it and will go back again for a 3rd trip, someday!

Carrie,
In reply to your question about Bob's Tour, we felt the combo day tour was well worth it as we are both big Sound of Music nerds. The guide/driver filled most of the driving time with lots of facts and stories about both the SOM film and the real Trapp family, so while several of the sights we visited we had already seen on our own the context that the guide provided made that part of the tour worthwhile. As for Hallstatt, while we felt ok with the amount of time we had in the town, I would like to go back and spend the night to experience that beautiful town when the tour busses leave.

Thanks so much for the trip report! It sounds like an awesome time!

When you were in Bolzano did your guide give you information on how to get the bus to Seiser Alm or had you figured that out before you got there?

I appreciate the information on the Bob's Tour. I was leaning towards taking the combo one and I think I will stick with that one.

Pam,
Our guide told us exactly which two bus lines to take, pointed out where they loaded, and even gave us departure times. Also our hotel provided a pass that covered all the bus routes in the area.

Oh, excellent! That is good to know! I did that area on a Best of Italy tour and thought it was so spectacular that I'd like to go back. Plus I loved Bolzano and the Otzi Museum.

Thanks for doing the trip report. I’m so tempted by this tour. What were your temperatures like?

Carrie,
We were on the fabulous Alps My Way tour in late May. We arrived two days prior to the start of our tour and took both of the Bob’s Special Tours that you mentioned——the half day SOM tour and the full day Hallstatt tour. We enjoyed both tours immensely! I personally think that Hallstatt warrants a full day—despite the crowds—the scenery is breathtaking.
We added on two days after the tour ended in Chamonix to visit Annecy. It was spectacular! I would highly suggest visiting Annecy if time allows after your My Way Alpine Tour.

Hi Wanderlust, Thanks for sharing your experience. There’s so many great options for each location. In addition to Hallstatt, I’m also thinking about going to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to add any extra time at the end of the trip. I have limited vacations days and it was either add more time to this tour or add an extra trip later in the year. I opted for the extra trip. So, when this tour ends, I’ll take the train to Lucerne and fly out of Zurich the next day. I did see that Annecy is included in the My Way France tour. I may consider that tour depending on how the My Way Alps goes.

Lyndash,
We hit the lottery with our weather. Temps were pleasant throughout the trip, a welcome relief as the area had just suffered through a terrible heat wave in late June. In mid July we usually had 70s and low 80s (20-28) in the daytime and 50s-60s (10-15C) at night. Warmest was Bolzano which topped out at 90F (32C) one day, but it was much cooler up on the Alpe du Siusi. By the way, our hotels in Salzburg and Bolzano both had AC, while the rest did not. However we never felt too warm (or cool) at night. We had some rain showers but nothing heavy and not enough to disrupt our experiences - in fact most of the rain fell while we were driving or at night.
