I just booked 13 days in Alaska with a group of 14 fully vaccinated travelers. That seems prudent at this point. Time will tell.
When? I thought you just got back or were there.
Is your trip with a tour company?
Yes. Natural habitat adventures. They don’t seem to be having trouble filling available spaces.
"Trip Reports" section? Isn't this where you should regale us with the wonders of Alaska after July 2021? Regardless, enjoy. It's a beautiful state.
I have friends who have booked an Alaska trip, too. Even without the cruise ships, let's hope this helps the industry in Alaska.
My trip does not involve a cruise ship. Starts in Fairbanks and works its way down to the Katmai.
"Down to the Katmai" --- did you mean Kenai?
Edit: I see it includes both.
Eric, I hope you have a wonderful trip to my state and have great weather with lots of wildlife!
I've had a few great day trips out of Seward into the Kenai Fjords before. Incredibly beautiful area with so much variety of wildlife. Looking forward to spending more time in the area.
I just booked a trip to Alaska in August. This will be our 5th trip in 10 years. It is such a beautiful state. We are flying to Anchorage and then driving to Denali, Talkeetna, Palmer, Seward and back to Anchorage. We are traveling with friends who have never been to Alaska. It will be so much cooler than Texas in August. The biggest negative is that the car we have reserved will be almost $200 a day and I was lucky to find one.
To all those planning to come to Alaska in July/August. If you haven't made reservations yet you might be out of luck. Especially for a car as there just isn't any or if you do find one the cost is going to be high. Be weary of some of the major car rental companies that you may have reserved with at a good rate. If you are even 1/2 hour late in picking the car up they will tell you they no longer have it, you were a 'no show'. Due to demand the car they rented you for $50/day they can get $200/day now so they won't hold your car. Also watch out for the 'smaller' companies. There are some that tell you "sure we have a car for you" but when you show up they have nothing. So be sure to get everything in writing otherwise you are sol. Best advice with the smaller companies is be sure they take a refundable deposit.
PLEASE, don't make reservations with more than one company. This is another reason prices are so high (supply and demand). I worked in and have friends in the business. There are people that will make 2 or 3 reservations 'to be sure they have something' while looking around for better deals. Worst thing is they don't cancel them or wait until the last minute to do so. This hurts everyone.
Eric, that sounds indeed prudent. Enjoy your trip.
