I’d suggest adding more details to your request for assistance. When are you traveling - dates? How many people are you seeking to accommodate? Are there any nonnegotiable amenities you desire - a washing machine? A/C? As presented your query is impossible to answer.

I would strongly suggest that you put your question in the correct section. I will have an answer there.

Welcome to the forum! I think the best section of the forum is Destination Q & A, and then choose Italy. I like the way you were specific in the question heading.

Hi Kmbbg, welcome to the forum. You posted this under Trip Reports, where people recount their recent trip experiences. You might get more responses if you post under Italy.

We like to stay in hotels for the services (primarily breakfast). I have not stayed in an air b&b.

As far as location goes, Rome sites are spread out. You won’t find one location that is convenient for everything. We stayed near the Pantheon and we’re happy with our choice. If we were to go to Rome again, we would probably stay somewhere else to get a feel for a different part of the city. We took a cab to the Vatican, but walked back. We walked pretty much everywhere else but some of the walks were long.

The sites in Florence are much more compact. You could stay pretty much anywhere and be within walking distance. We stayed near the duomo.

The RIck Steve’s Italy guidebook gives good suggestions on neighborhoods and hotels, and sightseeing strategies. I recommend looking at his guidebook to get some ideas as to what makes sense for you.

In Florence we like the Hotel California. Yes, that really is the name. Very nice place to stay and located so that you can walk to just about anywhere.

We stayed in an apartment in campo de fiori, the neighborhood has a village feel, walking distance to major sites in center Rome. We booked a driver/guide tour to visit places outside of town center. We would stay there again if visiting Rome in the future.
