5 Quick nights in Korćula, Croatia

I made a short stop on Korćula at the beginning of my main trip to Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina- because flights were easier and cheaper to Dubrovnik than going straight to Podgorica. I have been promising myself a return to Korćula after spending 3 nights there in 2021, and this seemed like the perfect time.

Stayed: Apartments & Room Nina, found on booking.com. This was a nice stay - just a simple room, but with a view out onto the main restaurant street and beautiful water.

Arrived and departed: Krilo catamaran ferry from Dubrovnik port. From the airport, I walked out the door and caught the €10 airport bus to the port. It made 3 stops, the last of which was the bus station which is just a 5-10 minute walk to the ferry. I pre-purchased my ticket and showed it on my phone. I also pre-purchased my ferry tickets both ways but probably didn’t need to. I also had those on my phone.

Did: Not a lot. I arrived somewhat late for my first night and basically went to bed.

Days 1 & 2, I just walked a bit, ate dinner, and rested (I wasn’t feeling 100%).

Day 2 it rained. I got wet, dried off, and did stop for something to drink at the small place owned by family of Barbara from Brooklyn’s husband and it was nice. Ate at Konoba Marco Polo on one of the small streets that go up from the water to the Old Town square. This was a repeat place from 2021. :)

Day 3: took a wine tour I had signed up for at the TI office. It was a small group (@10) tour and was enjoyable. After getting back, I walked further around the harbor than I had been before and had a really nice dinner at Restaurant Moreska, with views from the opposite side of the harbor.
Afterwards, I attended the Moreška show (€20 - also bought at TI, but it was available at the door as well), which was a lot of fun and which Barbara also told me about. It is a 30 min show of sword dancing - elaborately choreographed sword fighting set to music (live) telling the story of two kings fighting over a girl. Moreska.hr. Preceding it was a 30 minute performance of folk music by a group of 6 men & 1 woman.

Day 4: I bought a €20 ticket (at the harbor) for the hop-on-hop-off water taxi to 3 destinations (2 different islands plus Lumbarda at the tip of Korćula island). It was absolutely gorgeous weather and the perfect beach day, so I swam at 2 of the 3 stops. You could buy a cheaper ticket for just one stop, but I had never been to any of them, so wanted to sample all of them. A boat came by every 30 minutes each direction.

Day 5: Morning ferry back to Dubrovnik and on to Montenegro! This was a really great place to get over jet lag and relax!

Lesson I am learning: that others have mentioned many times - In some of these smaller destinations, there is plenty to do that you won’t find ahead of time on the internet. Plenty of boats in the harbor and the Moreška dance performance didn’t show up online for my dates, but I found it on a sign.

Glad you enjoyed your mini vacation on Korčula. I hope you mentioned us at the Galerija. We’ll be there in about 10 days. The Moreska Dance is fun and the costumes elaborate. What’s nice is that the performers are all locals from the island. Unfortunately, they only perform the dance during the summer. Did you see/hear the two fellas at the top of the main staircase?, they are also friends and fun guys.

Barbara, I didn’t mention you - thought of it, but it was just a nice relaxing (inexpensive) place to sit for something to drink. I kept hearing music - then suddenly a door opened across from the cafe and out come what we deduced were the Moreska dancers followed by the band, headed to a private performance that night. A fun unexpected moment! (Galerija, or “Gallery” for those looking). One of the troupe was the 15 year old son of the man driving (and organizing) the wine tour and the son was present for some of that. It was a fun connection. I missed the guys at the top of the stairs!

TexasTravelmom, thanks for your trip report! We are planning to be in Croatia in September 2024. I especially appreciated the specific info regarding transferring from the Dubrovnik airport to Korcula. As you say, a good way to regroup after long plane rides and time changes.

I was on the island of Korčula in October 2023 and loved it! I took the hop on/off ferry to the last stop, Lumbarda, and rented an e-Bike and then rode the bike a short distance to 2 lovely wineries: Popic and Vitis. Popic Winery was already closed for the season, but the Vitis Winery was open and I loved their Grk wine, ambience, food, and view of the water and their garden. I highly recommend a visit to their outdoor wine tasting area. I also rode the bike to the town of Korčula and back which was an easy ride too.

Such a beautiful area. Thanks for bringing back good memories and loved your details! Those Krilo catamaran ferries are so handy to island hop to the major ones. Glad to hear you saw even more with the water taxi option!

Thanks, Jean! It’s a lovely area for sure!

juliemeg, I hopped off at all three stops - just for the experience - and spent more of my time swimming and eating on Vrnik. I didn’t make it to an ebike or a winery at Lumbarda, which it is famous for, but what a great idea! I can picture a wonderful afternoon spent this way. ❤️🍷
