We did 2 weeks in these countries by car. Picked up new BMW in Munich and stepped on the gas. The European delivery experience was great! We loved Munich, great dinner at Der Pschorr. Onto Salzburg, stayed at Pension Bloberger Hof which we loved, had an excellent dinner there-easy bus ride into town. Highlight of Salz. for me was 8am Mass (not big 10am) at Cathedral with local girl's choir singing-just beautiful. Rick is right, rest of town dead on Sundays. So-so lunch at modern art museum but views are great. Did SOM bike tour-good but you'll need strong legs (not so much for the one hill but to push big heavy steel bikes). Halstaat was next, stayed at Braugasthof-amazing views of lake-restaurant across the street was OK; had pizza at zur Muhle which was not bad. Highlight was hike around Altausee with excellent little outdoor cafe Strand at end of the trail.
Drove through Wachau valley-saw Mathaausen and Melk Abbey (which is undergoing renovations). Both worth seeing. 3 days in Vienna-stayed at Hotel zur Weiner Staatsoper-teeny rooms but great location and super-nice staff. Did most museums, royal apt's, Schonbrun, st Stephan's nightime concert. Best restaurant of trip was wine garden Schubel-Auer. Apart from food and wine, we didn't have reservation and they made a special table for us!!!Really above and beyond. A great experience-easy tram ride to get there. Ring tram ride was a bust as they were doing constxn and line 1 not working. Dinner at Danieli, Cantinetti la norma, both good- staff at Le Bol brought French attitude with them-go elsewhere. See part II for second half of trip.
