I learned about Auto Europe from this Forum after renting from Hertz overseas for many years. Auto Europe is the absolute best, wonderful customer service (easy pick up one city, drop off in another, change of itinerary in mid-trip) and so reasonable you won't believe the prices. Their all-inclusive insurance is a bargain. We like them so much we've used them to book flights and hotels. Terrific company.
I agree with what you say about Auto Europe. If you Google the rental address, you often can tell what brand of rental car you're going to receive. I usually pick a Hertz office address through them. I also check Hertz's direct rates with my corporate Gold Club membership. Sometimes Auto Europe is cheaper and sometimes Hertz's direct website is cheaper.
When traveling in Italy and a couple of other countries, the rental company's physical damage and theft insurance is required by law. But in other countries, the rental company's insurance is not mandatory.
Most people don't realize that their personal insurance policies from home are primary coverage, and the rental company's insurance is secondary. And if you use certain credit cards for car rentals, the card company provides physical damage insurance that's also secondary. In other words, I turn down the insurance if not absolutely mandatory.
One place they'll get you is on personal property theft insurance--which is a big profit maker for the rental company. Most people's homeowners' insurance will cover theft of personal possessions out of a rental car.
Yep, Auto Europe are consolidators on flights and hotels and sometimes can beat published prices.
And if you have any problems, they're based in New England and it's easy to communicate with them.
