2, 3, or 4 Person Seniors Backpacking Tour In Germany, Switzerland, Tuscany Region of Italy

Would any older solo travelers be interested in what I propose below?:

First, about me: 70 years old, retired, single, in good health, live in Colorado, active, think young. Last year did 2 Rick Tours, Italy and Germany/Austria/Switzerland, loved everything about them, especially the people in the tour group.
Have much more exploring of Europe to do, but would rather not do it by myself.

This year, August/September, want to do something different, more adventuresome, than another Rick Tour.
Note: The "backpacking" won't be like young kids do in summer -- would be a little more comfortable as explained below.

I'm proposing this:
3 or 4 of us of similar age, interests, and abilities, wanting to travel but rather not by yourself, would meet up at an agreed location within our travel interests, then travel together for 3 weeks or longer.
Travel would be by regional train mostly, buying economy tickets as we go (definitely not walking everywhere!! ... not that kind of backpacking!!).

Lodging would be a variety of choices, including bed & breakfasts, pensions, some zimmer frei places in smaller communities, every few days perhaps a nice hotel. And yes, why not try a hostel for the experience?.
A few major destinations might be agreed on in advance, reservations made in advance ...... but other destinations would be day-to-day planning.

If a group of 4, and not all in agreement, splitting up into 2's would be OK, then getting back together in the evening would be good.
Any real "backpacking" would be during the day as we see the sights.
Also, if one cannot commit to 3 weeks or longer, can end the trip sooner. Same if any personal chemistry or other issues develop, then each can separate from the group.

The benefits of traveling together (as senior citizens) would be safety, security, and assistance to each other if any difficulties arose.
Another benefit would be more fun traveling as a small group, and maybe lead to a similar trip each year.

Hopefully you get the main idea of this.

If interested, reply back either on this forum thread, or a private message.
If general inquiries, I suggest on this same thread for the benefit of others interested.
Later, more detailed questions, about the trip or each other, could be by the private message mechanism.
As far as getting to know one another, we can start on-line, then start using the phone.
(and if as many as 15 or 20 people are interested, I don't know yet how to handle that!)

Wow, Jim,
If I were older (or at least retired) I would sign up. I'm tethered to a high school schedule so I sing the "See You in September Song" to my students. You might try the hostel in Backarach as it is in the castle.
Hey, "Maybe, in a Few Septembers?"
Have a GREAT trip.

Thanks, Pam.
If you could go, you would be welcome.
Actually, your reply, from a lady, reminds me that my trip description does sound like a bunch of guys traveling together.
But ladies are welcome, in my opinion would add to the trip, if they are willing to tolerate \some old guys.
On my 2 Rick Tours last summer/fall, some of the best and most fun travelers were the ladies.
Was in Bacharach last summer with a Rick Tour, but the castle I visited was 20 miles down river in St. Goar.

Reposting re Eileen's directions!

Interesting and excellent idea, Jim. Yes, I THINK I would be interested although I have to say I am not much for carrying a lot of weight on my back anymore. The hostel idea is intriguing, though! I have a few trips already planned for the summer and fall this year but would be interested in a future trip if all goes as you think it will. One of those trips (London) is with my son and family who live in Lone Tree; I'm in Franktown. I plan to follow this thread and see where it goes. Thank you for posting this! Lots of food for thought.

Hi Jim:

Sounds wonderful! I, too, am a teacher. I am going on a small trip to Ireland and the London area in between professional development this summer but I will be back to work on August 10. However, I am set to retire next year in June, and I am looking for travel companions. I will keep an eye on this post and responses as I am ready to start long-range planning for the summer of 2016 and beyond. I have stayed in hostels, dives, Bed and Breakfasts, and some nice Rick Steves variety of hotels. This summer, I am sharing a flat with friends and family in London for 10 days. That will be a first. I know that you will enjoy your trip, and I would definitely be interested in traveling with other seniors after I retire next year. Keep us posted!

I was planning on going solo this September to Normandy Beaches, Paris , Barcelona and Madrid, 25 days. But nothing is concrete yet. "Backpacking" is how I travel. One bag, hostel, airbandb, couchsurfing, B and B, trains, buses and the cheap airlines. Keep me in mind, it would be nice to have company. You can check my profile on couchsurfing.com; Deborahriley

Oh, I am 64, single, live in KCMO and semi retired.
You aren't planning on a good old boys trip, are you??

Hello
I am in Australia, just retired at 67 and planning a trip to Spain, and perhaps beyond, in September 2015. Interested in the idea of travel companionship. Nothing in concrete yet, just researching. Would like to learn more about your proposal.
Cheers

just adding two cents worth here; we are world travellers and go on a lifetime membership with YHF yOUTH HOSTEL FEDERATION hostels these days are excellent and probably the only way one can afford Scandinavia. That is how Scandinavians travel We have been known to travel 6 in a group all hostelling. Once introducing our friends to hostels they are hooked. Give them a try.

Well Jim, did you go?
I'd be interested in something similar next May or June (2016).

I'm interested in this, I want to do some travelling, but not do it alone. With some folks that have the experience would be great. I'm 62, and figure your plan would work well for me. So maybe for future trips. I'm in Oregon and have a lot to learn about travelling in Europe.
