Planning three week trip in August starting in Krakow traveling through Slovakia and last two weeks in Ukraine where will spend a couple days visiting grandparents ancestral villages. Any tips on travel in Lviv and Kiev?

You can get to Lviv via a train from Krakow (but not a direct flight). You can fly direct to Lviv only from Warsaw.

DIstances are long and take time. Look into flying to shorten the time spent.
Many years ago (5-7), we traveled from Kosice, Slovakia to Uzhgorod in the Ukraine and then caught a train to Lviv. This was a 2 part bus trip that invovled changing buses between Kosice and the border. If you are planning on traveling by bus or train from E Slovakia to Ukraine, do your homework (check out the thorn tree forum on the Lonely planet website) to figure out the various combinations. Just know that a few years ago it wasn't easy.
