Seattle/Eastside travel book and map exchange?

I have been toying with this idea for some time, and thought I would see if there is any interest.

My thought is to meet around a picnic table in Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island, and bring books and maps that one no longer needs or wants, placing them on the table for others to see and take. No formal discussion topics, just an informal meet and greet, and the opportunity to recycle these items and/or gather up some new ones. And maybe meet a new forum friend.

I chose Mercer Island as it is convenient for both Seattle and Eastside residents. And for me, because I live here. Luther Burbank Park is close to the freeway with easy access and ample parking. It is also an easy walk from the Mercer Island Park and Ride for those who would take public transport. The Park & Ride is well served by the 550 bus from either downtown Seattle or Bellevue.

The picnic tables are scattered around a large open lawn area that slopes down to the lake. It is adjacent to a very nice large off-leash area, and you are welcome to bring your dog to the meeting (leashed at this point) for a romp and maybe a swim afterwards.

For time frame, I am thinking of late March or early April, on a non-rainy Saturday morning.

I hope to hear that there is some interest—no commitment, just trying to gauge if it worth my time to proceed with planning this. Please post responses on this thread rather than by private message. Thanks.

That's a great idea, Lola! If I were in Seattle, I would be there.

I would be interested!

I love the dog park there. Our breeder does meetups there with all of her past pups and families.

It would be fun to meet all four of you.

Aimee, if you have plans to be over this way in the spring, we could schedule around that. And Mikliz, it is indeed a nice dog park, with a good group of people and dogs. We lost our Lab 4 years ago, but we still walk through once in a while to get our “dog fix”.

Sounds like a plan! Thanks, Lola. Edited to add: I always need a dog fix!

I will be up that way in that time frame because my daughter, who lives up there, is having a baby. I certainly have books I can dispose of or trade off. When you decide on the date, and depending on my daughter, I would like to be included.

I could be tempted to join. I have some extra travel books I should probably find a new home for.

March-April will be a busy time for me, with a house-full of family guests visiting (then again, with three very rambunctious kids running around our usually child-free house, I might be looking for excuses to get out and run some very important errands for a couple of hours...).

This sounds like fun! If we’re home, I’d love to come. We will be in the Netherlands and Belgium for 3 weeks mid to late April, but otherwise free this spring.

Thanks all. This is shaping up nicely!

We will return from Italy on March 17, so after recovering from the trip I will consult the weather gurus and the responses and try to come up with a date that works.

Hopefully Andrea’s grandchild will make a timely appearance to allow her to attend. But then maybe she will be too busy, or too smitten, to tear herself away.

David, there is a very nice play ground there, appropriate for kids up to 9 or 10. Think small zip line, etc. Also tennis courts for older kids. Maybe you could round up the rugrats and turn them loose there to work off some energy.

Lola—we gave two golden retrievers and this is our favorite dog park. Our breeder is trying to set a day for a meetup and asked me. So I’ll try to do both on the same day and you can really get your fix😉.

Baby is due March 27th and we plan to arrive up there about one week before that. Our plans are flexible as far as how long we are staying. We just have to arrive home by April 22nd.

I would be interested in joining if it works with my schedule. I have a trove of books that I could contribute - would help me with my downsizing. And I'm always ready to check out a new dog park. Didn't know about ths one so sounds like it could be a fun, productive day!
