LA/OC meeting

I would love to meet up with fellow RS travelers and am so jealous of the other cities that have meetings going on. Let’s get this going! I’m sure we can find somewhere in the middle to meet. I hope I get some replies ☺️

I just want to wish you good luck. Jane and I started one about a year ago in Tulsa area. Small group of 3-5 of us. We had ours yesterday and had 15 people show up. Keep working at it. I really don't like FB but It helped us get people interested. Try to use that as an option. I made us a Rick Steve Tulsa Travel Group page. Good way to communicate to people who really are not on the forum for meeting updates, etc.

I have a Rick Steves T shirt and sometimes that gets some conversations started when I am out and about.

Good luck and keep hanging in there.

I hope you can get a group together. We have been meeting in Sacramento for 7+ years and I look forward to it every month. I would think that You would find plenty of people interested. We started off with 6-8 people and quickly the group grew. Now we often have 20+. If you start communicating with interested people you can find a location that works for you. We met a one location twice, then changed it to be more central. I think it's crucial to always meet the same day (we do the 3rd Saturday) time and place each month. We often have people who are rarely on this forum, have heard about us through word of mouth, etc. We want everyone to know when we will be there. We have never looked for people through Facebook, but we have plenty of people to begin with. We can't really handle more people!

Good luck!

Claudette, I'm definitely interested. It would be great to get together to talk about all things travel. . . none of my friends/colleagues are interested, though they give lip service.

Good luck Claudette! If Northern California can support 2 overflowing groups, surely Southern California can support one. I tried to get one started for the central coast once but it didn't get a response. I really think the north of LA and LA to the south area would both be wonderful. There are a lot of regular posters in the LA region + 100 mile radius.

Hi,

Huntington Beach where I used to go "Old World" when I got to OC. Is "Old World" still there with its restaurants and shops? I haven't there in years...nice place and good food.

Kim, Andrea and Mona- thanks for the encouragement. Hopefully we can start off small and grow. Maybe I’ll send PMs to some local posters as well.

Tim- maybe we can aim for the third Saturday of February in keeping with the traditional meeting time. I have a friend not on the forum who is interested as well. Closer to the date we can decide on somewhere in the middle to meet. I’ll keep in touch!

Fred- Yes! Old World is still there and have an annual Oktoberfest and monthly dachshund races. Say hi if you ever come down this way!

@ Claudette....Thanks for the information, and I will. I went to two places in So. Calif that had German oriented themes with German shops and delis, nice, affordable restaurants like Old World, ie, Huntington Beach and Torrance, which if I remember correctly was called "Alpine Village." It has been at least 25 years since I was last at Old World.

Fred, I think the Alpine Village in Torrance is still in business as well. I’ve only been to Old World once and it’s in my backyard. The area around it has grown as well. It’s now surrounded by a newly refurbished mall, a Costco, and mixed use bldgs that have businesses on the ground floor and apts on the upper floors.

I'd be willing to meet up I think but I haven't gone on my trip yet so I don't have much to add :)

Here’s hoping Tim! I created a new topic announcing our group and hope we get a little more attention. Location TBD but Torrance/ El Segundo/Santa Monica are in the running.
