International Travel Meeting - Sunday May 30 @ 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time

Who’s ready for another International Travel Meeting? If you enjoy talking about travel and interacting with others that share the same passion, then this is the place for you.

There is a limit to the number of participants. It has been determined that more than 25 is too many. You must reply to this thread to be invited. The first 24 people to respond will be admitted to the meeting. I can send more invites in case any of the those 24 people don't log in. We will have a 5 minute grace period starting at 9:30 a.m. After that any others still in the 'waiting room' can be admitted, up to a total of 24 people. So far each month anyone who was in the waiting room has been admitted because inevitably some people aren’t able to join in as they had planned. If someone finds they can’t participate after all, I would appreciate it if you can let me know as soon as you know.

Each month there will be a couple of topics to discuss. More suggestions are welcome for future months. Of course we will discuss other things as well.

Topics for this month -

  • Cruising - Pros and cons

  • How do you determine where and when to go on your trip? Do you prefer new places? Revisit places you’ve been? Checking places off a bucket list? Do you plan around an event?

Please let me know in a reply to this post or with a PM if you are interested. I will then email the Zoom meeting link. If you have participated previously I already have your email address. If you haven’t you will need to send it in a PM.

Please note that the July meeting will be on Saturday, 7/3 because of the holiday. I know having the meeting on a holiday weekend is not ideal. If enough people prefer it to be on Sunday, 7/11 we can do it that day instead. Please let me know your preference in your response.

EDIT: The July meeting will be on Sunday the 11th.

Count me in. I missed last months and cannot miss two in a row.

I just sent the zoom link to all who have responded so far.

I see no one is weighing in on the July meeting date. Please let me know if you have a preference for the two dates I mentioned.

I’ve been keeping a list of topics that have been suggested, but there aren’t many left. More ideas please.

Please count me in. Either July 3 or 11 works fine for me. Thanks.

Hi Andrea,

Count me in please. The topics look great!

As far as July is concerned, while I would be ok for July 3rd I only sporadically participate so don't consider my opinion too heavily.

Thanks,
Canadian Andrea

Add my/our name, too. Either July date works, but July 11 might be easier.

Thanks to all who are mentioning July dates. Andrea in Canada, I’ll try not to confuse us. We are both Andrea from CA (California & Canada). 😉

Either date works for me in July but the 11 would be my first choice. I’ll try and think of more topics. Maybe you can do just one of your two topics for the next meeting. By the time we introduce new people, chitchat about current events, etc we seem to never get to the second topic.

Andrea, put me down for a possible spot and just send me the link last minute if you have space (sorry to be trouble). I don’t yet know if I can make May 30 or not and won’t take a spot from someone else.

And I will be gone for both July dates, so I don’t have an opinion there. Thank you!!

Please send me the meeting link for 30 May 9:30am, thanks

On the topics topic, I wonder if anyone wants to discuss dreams versus reality
when out and about in a foreign (to you) city -- is Paris on foot so so different from the Paris in your cloudy dream head?
Which version draws you?
Do you seek out the 'real' city or town or do you aim to live out your dreams? Is there necessarily a big gap between these?

Note that the opposite of real is not simply 'fake' -- the opposite of real is sometimes 'ideal'.
Also on my mind is the word 'pedestrian' when used to mean ordinary or dull or prosaic. Does that mean the opposite of 'pedestrian' is 'elevated'? 'Scintillating'? 'Poetic' or 'epic'?

Zoom links have been sent to everyone. A few people have indicated that they may not be available when the meeting begins. If you know for sure ahead of time, please let me know. If you might be delayed but still want to attend you can log in when you’re available. If I don’t admit you within 5 minutes you can assume we are full. Let me know if you have any questions.

Please add me as well and 7/11 would be preferable for July, thank you Andrea!

Hi Andrea,

I'll be in Chicago visiting family on all 3 of those dates, so I may not know my availability until the day before. I'll contact you if it looks like I can join you. If there's an open spot, great.

Thank you so much for doing this!

I may have a meeting then but won't know until midweek. I'd like to come. Dates in July don't affect much - go as you go.

Oh like to join! Either July date, but the 11th would be easier. Thanks!

I'd love to participate if there is still room.
(And either date in July would be fine so far.)

I think I can make this one.
Either date for July is fine with me.
Thanks, Andrea.

Nigel, did I already send you the link?

Barbara, I like your suggestion of just having one topic per month. We have had months where we’ve gotten to both topics, so maybe we should just assume that the first topic may take up too much time and the second topic will become the first topic for the next meeting.

So far everyone who has shown a preference for a July meeting date have chosen 7/11. Bring your own Slurpie.

I know people are busy on this holiday weekend. We still have room at the meeting in case someone didn’t see this post previously. Let me know if you’re interested.

We got plenty of great info and tips and some entertaining stories, too -- thanks Andrea for getting us together!

Great meeting. Invite Ron to all of them, please.

Another fun and informative meeting! Yes Ron, please attend every month. The information and advice you give is much appreciated.

Once again we ran out of time before we could get to our second topic. Next month our topic will be:
How do you determine where and when to go on your trip? Do you prefer new places? Revisit places you’ve been? Checking places off a bucket list? Do you plan around an event? Are age and physical abilities a factor in deciding where to go now vs. where to go in the future?

People need to respond to the new thread for that month to request attendance. Otherwise this becomes a never ending job for me to keep track of things. I post approximately 7-10 days before each meeting, so be watching for it. I mentioned ahead of time the July 11 date because it is not our normal first Sunday of the month. Robin, I have started a new list for July and you are on it. Let this serve as notice that I won’t be adding anyone else before the next meeting announcement.

although I wanted to be on that list too, always but especially after yesterday's successes, I will wait quietly in a corner. I can take a (not so subtle) hint !!

Nice concisely worded July topic.... imagine how long it could have been if you hadn't held yourself in (or if Jim hadn't said, "that's enough")

July will be here before you can say Jack Robinson

Nigel, lol! I would have been happy to continue the meeting a bit longer, but I still had things to do before departing for an almost 3 week RV trip. We are on a one night stop over to break up the drive before we get to our first Oregon destination this afternoon. I am so looking forward to cooler weather as we travel north. It was 106 degrees at home yesterday.

We hated to miss Sunday’s meeting and topic as we squeezed our first ever cruise in under the wire of the pandemic closures, Feb 3-18, 2020 (NZ-AU). Did you happen to have a note taker for the Sunday meeting 🤞?

Have a great green escape to the PNW!

Like Mona, I’m hoping for notes from this meeting as well ... I’ve been eagerly awaiting this topic and was disappointed to miss it.

I took notes about things that were of interest to me. My notes are at home, and I’m not. I won’t have access to them until we arrive home on the 18th. Mona, I can write them down for you (if I can decipher the notes almost 3 weeks later😆) and give them to you at our Sacramento meeting. Mellani, I can email them to you. I hope I don’t forget. 🤞🏼

Please add me to the list for July. Somehow, I got my dates mixed up and missed last Sunday. I'm sure it was the usual lively discussion!! It's been a wonderful fix. I'm so grateful to you, Andrea, for spearheading this zoom group. Hope to see ya'll on July 11!
(Just read all the posts. Will post my request when appropriate...)

Jody, thanks for understanding. I hope to see your request, and you, next month.
