International Travel Meeting - Sunday, May 2nd @ 9:30 Pacific Time

Who’s ready for another International Travel Meeting? If you enjoy talking about travel and interacting with others that share the same passion, then this is the place for you.

There is a limit to the number of participants. It has been determined that more than 25 is too many. You must reply to this thread to be invited. The first 24 people to respond will be admitted to the meeting. I can send more invites in case any of the those 24 people don't log in. We will have a 5 minute grace period starting at 9:30 a.m. After that any others still in the 'waiting room' can be admitted, up to a total of 24 people. So far each month anyone who was in the waiting room has been admitted because inevitably some people aren’t able to join in as they had planned. If someone finds they can’t participate after all, I would appreciate it if you can let me know as soon as you know.

Each month there will be a couple of topics to discuss. More suggestions are welcome for future months. Of course we will discuss other things as well.

Topics for this month -

Modes of transportation - Planes, trains or automobiles? Maybe bus? How do you decide how you will travel between locations?

Cruising - Pros and cons

Please let me know in a reply to this post or with a PM if you are interested. I will then email the Zoom meeting link. If you have participated previously I already have your email address. If you haven’t you will need to send it in a PM.

Please note that the June meeting will be held on Sunday, May 30th.

Yes! Please add me too. How do you want to be notified if one can’t attend? Via this thread or by email?

Ohhhh topics near and dear to my heart. Please include us, but like Diane, if we can’t make it how do you prefer to be notified. We are scheduled to take a walk with some out of town friends that day but our time hasn’t been set...

i am rsvp-ing as a yes, myself without any plus-one. :-)

As part of the discussion topic I hope people will also do show'n'tell of how they find schedules and buy tickets,
like the perennial tug in Paris between individual ride tickets (a carnet thereof) vs all-day tickets vs multi-day tickets

also, are any of you using the built-in transit payment features of your smartphones? (like iPhones have a setting specifically allowing skipping the approval step...)

Me, too! Depending on our travel schedule, it may be from the back seat of a car in the Sierras (in which case I will be mostly listening.)

I won’t be able to attend now since we’ve switched back to in-person church services. But I have really enjoyed attending your meetings, Andrea! Thank you so much for the past invites!

To contribute a comment to your transportation topic, I plan our trip locations to be no more than 2 1/2 hours apart by train, so it’s very easy for us to travel by train, and we’re able to add some fantastic, less crowded places, too. There is an occasional exception- Wengen-to-Stresa was longer on the Switzerland/Italy trip. Each itinerary covers one country or sometimes two adjacent ones, so mid-trip flights aren’t needed.

I purchase our train tickets a few months ahead on the train sites, i.e. Trenitalia as soon as they’re loaded on the site and save a lot of money! We always switch locations right after an early breakfast - easy to select the right ticket. Oh and I always pick the fastest train times.

Cruising - we’ve never had an interest, but I have friends who love it. A cousin recovering from cancer was able to take a river cruise which was perfect for her energy level.

This was another fun and informative meeting. Thanks to Andrea and Jim for hosting these virtual international meetings! Thanks to all for the interesting (and occasionally hair raising :-> ) car rental and other travel transportation stories and helpful tips (including travel insurance-related ones).

I second my thanks! As always, I picked up some very useful tips (like car rental for my daughter visiting the States this summer with both a U.S. and UAE license). And I am happy to NOT be in the running for the best car rental story! 🤣🤣

I had a wonderful time - thanks so very much to Andrea for putting together such a great space.

Gotta say - been driving since 1968 and Chani's story of the gymnastic car rental absolutely takes the biscuit - hands down. She is the WINNER
