First Trip to Bucharest – How Many Days and Where to Stay?

I stayed a week for my first visit, which allowed me to visit Parliament, the Ceaucescu Mansion, the National Village Museum, the National Peasant Museum and several connected Art Museums, plus take a food tour and a walking tour that included Old Town. But then I like a week in most big cities.

The best advice I can give for where to stay is near a bus stop because there is a lot of distance to cover between the main sights in Bucharest. I used the local busses, with a cheap transit pass that also included the metro, a lot to tame those distances.

There are different travel styles to consider, how much time you have for the whole trip and what you will be giving up elsewhere for each day you spend in Bucharest.

A minimum in my mind is two full days. I mean wake up and go to bed in the town type of full days, so we are talking 2.5 days of sightseeing. For most tourists there the points of interest are going to be limited. Many tourists will be begging for the door after 3 full days. If you add up all the time I have spent there over the years it might add up to 14 days and I could do another 14 and not be bored. But I know people so that changes the dynamics completely.

The big question is after day 3 in Bucharest what are you giving up someplace else? Because another day in Bucharest isn’t worth doing 1 instead of 2 days in Sighisoara.

As for where to stay, if you are doing it all by bus, well, that might influence things. I would tend with two or three full days to hire a guide to learn a bit more about culture and life and personal … well, I just enjoy meeting and talking to the locals. For me, just for me, my time is more efficiently used and I am more relaxed. With a guide, don’t worry about the bus stops as much. I have stayed in an apartment in a suburb a few times, but when playing full fledged tourist I have stayed in 3 different hotels so far. Any of the three I would say is great. The most recent was the Moxy in the Old Town. I sort of like the old town … especially around the fringes in the evenings but not so much on weekends. It’s a bit modern in attitude for my taste, but it worked well and the location was near a wine bar I like. I have only been once and stayed a week, which is not what I normally do. But there was a music festival, which took up 4 of my evenings. All the sights/museums I went to took up about a half a day each by the time I got there via public transportation. So take a look at what is there and see what appeals to you.

I will say I am not normally a “city person”, so I was surprised at how much I liked Bucharest. But I liked some of Romania’s smaller towns and countryside more. Sibiu is really nice. So, it really does matter how you fit your whole trip together and what you enjoy.

I agree with everyone that a lot depends on what else you want to see there, how much time you have, and where else you are going to. With that in mind, I really enjoyed Bucharest, and I would suggest at least four nights there. More if you've got the time—if you like cities, you can always find something to do. But, like TexasTravelMom, I really liked the smaller towns and cities like Sibiu and Brasov, so hopefully you can make room for those.

With regards to staying in Bucharest, I stayed in the⁠ Piața Romană neighborhood, right off Calea Victoriei, a very bustling and attractive boulevard with many cafes, shops and other attractions.

I stayed at the Rembrandt Hotel in Old Town. Excellent location and a very nice boutique vibe.....but this was pre-COVID and things change. I only stayed three nights and regretted leaving as I truly enjoyed the Romanian experience. More seasoned travelers recommend other cities to include in a Romanian visit, but my time was short. I highly recommend Ana Adamoe, an excellet local guide. I can offer her contact information if you wish.

TexastravelMom, Mardee: you guys went recently apparently. Did you stay in hotels or short term rentals? Did they have names? TexasTravelMom, what neighborhood was yours in?

Mr. É, CW and I arrived the same day Sept. 2025 and traveled together. Mardee arrived a few days later and joined us.

I stayed in an apartment on Calea Victoriei near the Museum of Collections. I liked it and it worked well for me. There was one bus line that ran in front of the apartment, but with the festival the route changed and it wasn’t very useful. So I ended up with a 10 minute walk to other bus stops coming or going. Not a big deal - just unexpected. With 2-3 days, I might choose something closer to Old Town. Or actually, something closer to the main road and, as CW said, a bus stop. But really, I didn’t see that an specific area makes a whole lot of difference. There were several areas I saw that I could have been happy with.

I liked Bucharest more than I thought I would, and a few days there is time well spent, but I agree that it’s best not to spend too much time there at the expense of Romania’s more scenic areas. I was there about the same time as TexasTravelMom and it sounds like where we stayed was quite close to her accommodation. We were with a tour that used Hotel Berthelot; the layout of its public areas was a bit odd but I can’t otherwise fault it, it was very nice. It’s just a block or so from Calea Victoria which is the main boulevard running north-south down towards the old town and there are lots of restaurants, etc in that area near the hotel, not just down in old town. It’s about a 30 minute walk at leisurely pace down to the Old Town, and very pedestrian friendly. I can’t speak to the local bus service as we had our tour bus. Victoria is pedestrianized at certain times and places which is good, but I expect may mean it’s not the best bus artery.

I stayed at the Scala Boutique Hotel in the Piața Universității neighborhood when I first got there to join up with CW and TTM. But then at the end of our tour, when we came back, I stayed in an apartment off the Calea Victoriei that I rented through booking.com. I liked both areas and found them convenient to get to most sights. Of the two, though, I think I preferred the latter, as I enjoyed walking around in the early evening and there were lots of people out and about then.
