There are 3 nonstops a day from Zurich on Railjet, the Austrian express train. Looks like you can get advance purchase nonrefundable for as low as 49 euro pp. Trip takes 8 hours. Get this price from Austrian Railway website http://www.oebb.at/en/. From the Swiss rail site they only list standard fares of 123 CHF.

Use the German Rail (Bahn) website to find connections. (Hint: use "zuerich" for Zürich. That will allow you to get the main station in Zürich (Zürich HB). If you use Zurich, you'll only get the airport station.) But German Rail will not have the best fares. Use Austrian Rail (as Sam advises above). It looks like there are direct 8 hour RailJet (RJ) connections from Zürich to Vienna about every two hours (8:40, 10:40, 14:40, & 16:40, but not 12:40).

Thank you so much for the informations. I tried going to that website, tried booking tickets from Zurich to Vienna but i keep getting an error. Which code or name of the train station should i use for Zurich & Vienna? We will be staying in Winterhur, Zurich.... Is it doable for a 10-day trip to go to Zurich, Vienna & Milan? Should we just buy the ticket at their train station? Are they the same price online? Thank you again ;)

The real name of Vienna is Wien, so use that name. Vienna is just the traditional English name for the capital of Austria. Doable in 10 days? Sure, if your not spending too many days on stopovers between these 3 cities. Booking European trains is the same as airlines, advance nonrefundable purchases are a lot less that the refundable price.

What error? You can't purchase them from German Rail and you need to register and get a password to purchase the tickets from Austrian Rail.

Nannette, Taking the train from Zürich HB, you'll arrive at Wien Westbahnhof (west train station). I would suggest the RJ. As for hotels near the station, there are several. The newest and least expensive one is the Meininger Hotel ( a German chain) connected to the station with good rates. I have checked this place out myself for future stays. All that construction in the past years around Westbahnhof is now gone as of this summer.

I'll repeat some of what others have said and make a correction or two. You can book up to 90 days in advance on the Austrian Rail site. Doing so ASAP can get you a SparSchiene Schweiz fare as low as €29.00. Registering on the site is optional, not mandatory. Enter Zuerich as your departure point and Wien as your arrival point.

Nannette, Sorry, but I can't recommend any places to stay. While I'm familiar with the Austrian Rail site, I haven't been to either Zurich or Vienna.

Hi, Regarding my earlier post: the new hotel next to Westbhanhof is Motel One, (a German chain), not Meininger...pardon the mistake.
