We want to take a night train from Zurich to Venice, spend the day in Venice and go back to Zurich (homebase) on another night train. Is this ridiculously optimistic? We'll be traveling in early August - any advice on couchette reservations? Should we reserve now or is waiting until a few days before our travel date sufficient?

Which train / train / train or train / bus combinations did you have in mind? I've just had a squint at the schedules and from what I can see you will be changing trains in the middle of the night, many of the options have 2 or more changes.

You're right...maybe the better choice would be to get a room in Venice and take the train back the next day. the night trains take twice as long and all those stops...defeats the purpose.
