I'm going to use American (due to FF miles) to head to Europe this summer. Does anyone know if you book an AA codeshare flight on BA can you upgrade or buy the WT+ (economey plus) seats? Can you do it over the phone or call BA after you get the AA tickets?
Are you sure you CAN book a flight on a British Airways codeshare flight using AA miles? When I last checked online, they only offered award seats on AA flights, not any BA codeshare flights (the 4-digit numbers like 6153). If you can, you better make sure they are "upgradable" seats before you book them. Not all economy seats can be upgraded to WT+. And you should find out the price. I believe that "add-on" upgrades are more expensive than "instant upgrades" made at the time of booking (booked as a "book and upgrade seat on BA). At least I've seen a lot of complaints about that.
as a BA FF, i can tell you that is it were the other way around AA would not let us upgrade without a fee and some codes wont allow you to gain any points or half of them. But remember AA and BA are now under the Avios points system so you are probabaly better to call BA/AA and check to see. BA allows us to upgrade to WT plus but it isn't really worth it unless you absolutely need the tiny extra bit of leg room and the power adapter which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
Thanks. I plan on buying the tickets (not using FF miles). The flight I am looking at is BA0192. I can book this as part of my flight to London. If I buy this ticket through AA my question is can I then call BA and upgrade to WT+? I called AA and they said they can't do it on their side because they can't see those seats in their system. AA doesn't have economy plus codes for plans with WT+ (AA doesn't have economy plus on any of their planes).
If you are buying the tickets, why not just do it on the BA website and then do the instant upgrade they offer? That way you will know right away if it is possible, and if not offered on the flight you choose, you can look at a different date or time. I looked at tickets yesterday for April, and saw instant upgrades for our flight, from economy to E+, for $459 RT. In the past I have tried to upgrade BA tickets later (a month after purchase) and found (too late) that the ticket we bought was not "upgradable".
Sasha, I was going to buy them thru AA so I could use AA FF miles to upgrade the return trip. So I would buy on AA a BA seat for the flight over (hopefully call BA and upgrade to WT+) and then upgrade my AA flight to Bus Class on the way home (I don't have enough miles to upgrade 4 of us both ways on AA). Hope that makes sense, sorry for the confusion and thanks for the info. BA 0192 (code share with AA) - hope to upgrade to WT+ with $ through BA
AA 111 hope to upgrade to Bus Class with AA FF miles
Good luck and let us know if you succeed. FWIW, I checked on my potential flights, since a return on AA would allow us more options in terms of timing. If I booked on BA both ways I was immediately offered upgrades to WT+ on either or both legs. If I chose the BA flight outbound and an AA flight inbound, I was not offered any upgrade possibility on the BA leg. You might try calling BA customer service and see if they can give you any insight or helpful advice. If you are buying 4 tickets you want to get it right!
So, now AA has Economy Plus coming in 2012. Ten 777-300ERs to be put into service into LHR. Now I need to find out which flights those are.
David, you can book BA w/ AA. I just booked two RT tickets to Milan (using miles) via the AA Exec. Platinum helpline.
Two years ago, we booked BA on the AA website. When I got on the plane, I could not fit in my economy seat (they are not made for anyone over 5'10") so we upgraded on board to World Traveler +.
