Wizz Air schedules

I'm planning a trip in December that includes 2 nights in Vienna to see Christmas markets and then a flight to Nice. The only airlines I've found are Austrian and Wizz. Prices are double or more on Austrian, but now I'm worried.

When I finalized my itinerary and booked my hotels (all cancellable) Wizz listed flights on Thursday and Saturday at 6.40 pm. Fine, I'd have Tue-Wed afternoons/evenings in Vienna plus a lot of Thursday. That was a mere 3 weeks ago. Yesterday I looked at Wizz again and the schedule has changed completely, with flights only on Wed and Fri mid-day. That means extending my stay in Vienna and cutting short my stay in Nice by a night. Not terrible, but if the schedules change willy-nilly many more times before my trip, the hotels may not have available rooms or the prices may increase significantly.

Any thoughts?

Yes, this is something that can be a real bummer when flying on the low-cost airlines, and I include EasyJet on this, although I really like EasyJet.

The problem is that when flights don't run as scheduled (or when changes like this happen), it can really throw off your trip, as there is no “putting you on the next available flight” as there is with legacy airlines. I learned this the tough way several years ago one January weekend, when we were headed to Budapest for a long weekend for my birthday. Some snow hit Paris, and our flight was cancelled. We didn't have any other options, so we just turned around and went home. I've heard of more people with these experiences this summer.

So, depending on how flexible you are on where you spend your time on this trip, it might be the occasion to plump for a more-expensive ticket on Austrian. Of course it's never guaranteed that that will go right, either, but the system has more “give” in it, it seems to me.

It will be interesting to hear what other people's experience/thoughts are on this.

In general, I think that's a problem with any airline that doesn't offer a daily service - hopefully it all works out.
