Which is the best way to cruise the Rhine ?

We are a family of 4, driving from Paris to St. Goar, with our final destination Baden-Baden. Our plan is to cruise the Rhine, but having a car puts us in a dilema as to how do we get back to our car. Which would be the best cruise to see most of the castles? I assume K-D is the cruise line. I heard to take the boat in the direction the river flows (since it is quicker), which way is that? Is it possible to leave the car somewhere, take the boat, visit castles, and at the end of the boat ride take a train back? Sorry for so many qusetions, but I am at a loss in this particular area.
Thanks
Bill

The one-hour KD line cruise from Bacharach to St. Goar (or opposite) hits a good group of castles in about an hour. When you leave the boat, take the local train back to your starting point. It's about 14km by train and only takes a few minutes.

If you have the time, you can go on a lot longer rides and still catch the train back. This short trip gives you a "best of" look.

The Rhein flows to the northwest in that area. The trip from Bacharach to St. Goar, with the current, takes 40 minutes; the trip back, against the current, takes 70 minutes. I'm sure there are places to park in Bacharach, although I have always been on the train so haven't bothered to look.

One way on the K-D boat costs a lot more than the train; with a round trip ticket, the return trip is pretty competitive with the train to get you to return on the boat.

K-D's website, www.k-d.com, has schedules and fares and can be displayed in English. Click on the British flag in the upper left corner.
