go to www.vrbo.com - vacation rentals by owner.
I have had good luck renting apartments from them. They divide their rentals into arrondisements, you can see the difference in prices between them, and there is lots of information and pictures.

I have used this website: http://www.my-apartment-in-paris.com/en/ for my Paris vacation. It is a management company who helps apt owners find renters, short or long term. The people there are all courteous & friendly, yet businesslike. Most of the apts are located in the Left Bank. The apt I rented was very clean. Rates were very reasonable given one is dealing w/a 3rd party. My personal preference is the Latin Quarter, the 5th district. There are other companies out there who are equally respectable and advertise on the web.

We've used vacationinparis with very happy results. We highly recommend them. As for areas, I prefer being close to the center, so the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th. The Metro is great, so it's important to see where the closest stop is in relation to where you are staying.

My wife and I have used www.parisbestlodge.com for years and have never been disappointed. The owner Theirry, will meet you at the apartments, which he owns and has refurbished himself, and give you a rundown on local shopping and where to eat (and where not to) if you want to go out. On our first trip my wife commented "This is like having a friend in Paris. Now, after a few more trips...we do!
