Arriving by train from Barcelona, staying in Arles 3 nights (Sunday Oct 3 - 7)then heading towards Villefranche. Want to rent a car to use while in Arles. Should I rent on a Monday in Arles and drop off at AIX TGV? Should I rent in Nimes and drive into Arles? Also thought about trying to get a car in Perpignan, but smaller Avis or other car rentals are closed on Sundays unless I go to an airport. Is it easy to get from Arles to Avignon or AIX by train or bus? Thanks for suggestions.
Bob: We rented from the Avis Train station Arles a few years ago. The [INVALID]ion wasn't great and the staff were surly, but the location was hard to beat. It is pretty easy to get from Arles to Avignon by train, although the trains seem to bunch in the morning and late afternoon with a gap in between. You can also take a direct bus from the Arles train station to the suburban Avignon TGV station....which has a huge number of car rental agencies in a giant parking lot. To get from Arles to Aix I think you would have to transfer in Marseilles or possibly in Avignon. I think the specific route your train takes would matter...if you come directly into Arles, you might want to rent there...but if you are changing trains in Marseilles or Avignon, you really might want to rent at Avignon TGV.
The TGV train station in Avignon has a really large & helpful rental agency building right outside the station.
I rented a car at the TVG station at Avignon and everyone was very helpful. There were several companies. BTW i drove in Aix En Provence and ended up driving around the circle a couple of time and finally called my hotel and they talked me to the hotel. S o, get GPS if you can. Pam
