We are flying from Split Croatia to Stuttgart Germany at the beginning of October. 4 days later we are flying from Stuttgart to Bologna Italy. (Taking a detour to see relatives)
Do we need to purchase those tickets soon or can we do it only a few days before?

If money is no object you could book a few days before. Have you ever noticed that prices on airline, or train or bus tickets generally go up the longer you wait as the capacity decreases?

As noted above depends on your finances.
I looked at Stuttgart-Bologna for Aug 10th $88--- looking at the same trip on Oct 10, it is $17

Book asap. Autumn vacations of some German states including Hessen (close by train to Stuttgart) fall into that date of travel.
