I know it's all a game, but around how far out is it suggested to buy tickets? Now we're at 6 months (and flights are around $1000-1200) should I wait until the new year?

Erin, I've traveled in April or May out of IAD the last 5 years and have always waited until January or February to buy tickets. Some years had sales right after the holidays and fares went down slightly. Last year, I watched fares from November through February and they never went down. But who knows? I wish I had a crystal ball. I always put a fare alert on sidestep.com and start monitoring that as soon as I know when I want to travel. If you see something reasonable, grab it.

Also check Kayak.com, which compares fares on a lot of different carriers and will give you results starting with the lowest fare.
