actually two questions here - is it generally best to wait til early fall to buy r/t tix us europe? we are visiting our daughter in school in barcelona for christmas - also would like to know from others what it is like in rome then - thanks - doug
Hi Doug,
That's a tough question but here's some advice from this site:
Airfares to Europe
Personally, I'm tracking airfare prices every day on www.Kayak.com. Then, when I'm ready to travel I know a good deal when I see it. Right now I'm seeing pretty good airfares for December.
I've been in Rome between Christmas and New Years and it's chilly but not too cold. I'd recommend it! You could consider flying "open-jaw" into Barcelona and home from Rome (Use the "Multi-city" feature when searching on Kayak or other website). Then fly one of the discount airlines between Barcelona and Rome (www.whichbudget.com as one example.)
You'll find some itinerary planning tips on Kent's post here:

Enjoy your travels!
I might not pull the trigger quite yet but would start tracking it daily with your desired price in mind. As soon as you find an option that meets all of your needs, including price, book it without hesitation. Don’t wait for a better deal. I booked a trip for November back in March, which seems a little early, but the fare to my desired destination had never been lower. I’ve been checking, and it hasn’t gone down beyond what I paid…it’s currently $165 per ticket higher. Try www.kayak.com and/or www.skyscanner.net
thank you both for your replies - the information is very helpful - doug
