When to buy Germany flights for December trip?

We're in Boston and looking to go to Munich in early December (Sat - Fri) for 5 nights to go to Christmas markets. Right now, airfare is around $550, which seems high for December, but I'm concerned that if I don't buy tickets now, prices will go up and we won't be able to go. Should we buy now, or gamble and hope that prices will come down?

During the same period from MIA it is almost 800. So at 550... Buy!!!

You haven't traveled much recently if you think $550 is high. What do you think is a reasonable price?

We paid $560 (round trip, with taxes) for a trip to Paris last September--and that was summer. I figured December should be cheaper, since the demand for air travel to Germany in December is lower. And besides, airfare from Boston to Europe is cheaper than the rest of the country! Last December it was $370 to Germany. I was hoping for something around the $400 mark.

The usual recommendation is at least 3 weeks and no longer than 3 months before a flight.

If you book now, the airline has got'ya. No reason to offer you better pricing. Yes, the dollar may fall further and gas go higher, but it's a crap shoot anyway. I would wait until later in the summer before setting up flights. You can check on kayak.com and similar sites to get a historic price continuum. Since you are planning to fly in low season and not anywhere to the Christmas holidays, you should get a good off-season rate, like $450, even later this year.

For the last three years, we flew from Orlando to Munich during high season (July)and our fares were about $1000. on Condor. Condor no longer flies out of Orlando and this year the price is $1250. on US Air. I would grab the $550. Every airline is looking to increase fares due to the increase in fuel costs.
