when should I buy my ticket??

My family and I are going to Italy for 2 weeks. We are planning on flying out June 3rd (next year 2009) and are not flexible with the leaving day due to other commitments. When is the best time to buy our airplane tickets? We are flying out of Orlando FL and into Venice. I would hate to buy them as soon as they become available if a better deal will come along a few months later... Thanks!

Colleen, this has been a topic discussed a lot. You basically need to look at the airfares and as soon as you see one that you feel is affordable, grab it. You can't guarantee if the price will fall as much as you'd like.

Typically the airlines have "sales" right before the travel season. For June, I think around March (??).

Check kayak.com and the site can scan fares for you. Its not a 3rd party sales site. They just tell you who has what fares, and you click it to jump to that site. Ultimatefares.com is good too, but rarely direct flights are given.

That is an impossible question. Nobody knows especially given the current economic situation with the dollar and oil prices. Generally earlier is better than later. I would guess that Jan or Feb might be a good time. I would price it now and check it every couple of weeks to see what the pattern is. Like buying stock. You will never know the cheapest price until you are past that price.

Kayak.com and other websites have fare watch features. You can put in what flights you are watching, and they will let you know when the prices change. But I agree with the above poster. Price the flight now and watch it for a few weeks. No one can predict what the prices will do, but you will be better able to know a "good" deal when you see one. You might also go to the websites of airlines that flight out of Orlando and see if they have fare sale newsletters you can sign up for. You might catch a deal that way.
