I need to book my ticket for Milano Centrale to Padova for August 29. I like to book soon after dates are released to get the discounted prices. It looks like bookings are available up to August 10. Do you know if they open more seats day by day or ? It seems to me in the past that they would open batches of time frames on certain days. Does anyone have any insight in this matter?
Looks like are opening 6 months in advance, so check back in March.
You do not need to book the day the tickets are released to get the discounted fares; I have found for the past 2 years travel that 3 months ahead is fine for Italy. Maybe it will be 4 months this year with so many people traveling, but it is unlikely to be 6 months.
And remember that the deeper the discount, the less flexibility you have with changes. I like to be able to make changes in our itinerary up to 2 months or so in advance. I just put a major change in our September trip to Switzerland and Italy, am glad I was able to do that without worrying about non-changeable tickets I already bought.
Also note that the schedule released that far ahead is not complete—-not all trains are listed. I just compared that route for trains on Aug. 1 and May 15. The August 1 schedule had only 3 Frecce trains listed for that , and all required a connection.
For May 15, I stopped counting at 25 possible routes. There is a mix of direct Frecce trains (which would be my choice, as we dislike changing trains outside of Switzerland), connected Frecce trains, EC trains, and Regionale trains—— those are slower but cheaper, and they do not sell out. And often cannot be booked online so far ahead; you have to use the Trenitalia app.
You can get cheap tickets up to a few days before departure. There is no need to book months in advance. And if you do not have the need to always travel the cheapest way possible you can wait till the day of travel itself.
Trains are mass transit. Most people travelling by train do not decide on their travel plans months in advance.
