When do I go through customs and Immigration returning to U.S. from Copenhagen by way of Iceland?

We're doing to WOW Air deal this June going from CVG (Cincinnati) to CPH for some business and fun in Copenhagen. We opted for a delayed layover in Reykjavik, 7 hours to be exact. I'm trying to discern when we'll have to go through customs and immigration on our return flight - at KEF (Iceland), or when we get back to the states in Cincinnati. As a reminder, we are leaving the airport for quick trip to the lagoon for a few hours before our return flight home.

Thanks in advance,
Ashley

Iceland is part of Schengen, so you don't have Immigration or customs going into Iceland from Denmark. But you will have Immigration (passport control) when you leave. Then you'll have both Immigration and Customs when you land in the US.

Yes Wow is expanding I get their alerts big time those inexpensive air fares.
You will go through immigration in KEF they will stamp your passport

Thank you both! I'm reading that passport control/immigration in KEF is pretty quick; actually that most operations are efficient there. Would you say that to be true mid-day in June on a Sunday?

Yeah the distance and time between getting off the plane and passport control is efficient, that is the first impression I got last July: brisk and lean; it is a small airport for the volume and there was a short distance to walk to the passport/immigration control. The volume in summer looks like it is going out grow the facilities at the airport considering they only opened operation from Chicago less than a year ago and now CVG and even St Louis recently.
I have flown Wow 3 times now most recently Chicago to Berlin, about 3 weeks ago.

Sunday in June anywhere in the world of airports is always one of the busiest days to fly, midweek Tuesday is they way to go back when you plan

Very helpful Jazz+Travels, thank you. Any pro-tips for WOW? We did the XXL seats and all luggage included, the "comfy" ticket option I believe.

  • You have passport control (aka immigration, check on whether YOU are allowed into the country) when you enter AND when you leave a country
  • You have Customs (check on whether GOODS can enter a country) when the goods enter a country only. This happens after you pick up your bags (for obvious reasons).

  • You will go through Schengen Area EXIT passport in Iceland. There is no passport control between Denmark and Iceland as they are both in the Schengen Area.

  • You will go through US ENTRY passport control and your bags will go through customs when you land in the USA.
