What's up with Trenitalia tickets?

In the past when I bought train tickets online from Trenitalia, I got a link to print our tickets at home, nice multi-colored tickets with a QR. ode for the conductor to scan.

I just bought tickets for our first train journey in August and there was no print-at-home option. Or at least I did not find one. Instead I got a confirmation with PNR code that we are supposed to use to pick up out tickets at a self-service machine when we get o Italy.

Is this the "new normal" or did I make a mistake somehow?

Could be the ticket. What class of ticket and train did you purchase?

It is a EuroCity train, EC86, in First Class.

Who is operating the train? That does not sound like a Trenitalia train. I thought all of the Italian trans ran a variation of Frecc......... name.

Horsewoofie, I see Frecce trains listed from Milano Centrale to Venezia S.L. through September 18. Maybe you just need to wait a week.

Sasha, Are you traveling from Italy to another country? That has happened to me on EC trains when Trenitalia is not running them just selling tickets. It is very easy to print the tickets at the kiosk.

Those tickets through Sept 18 have been listed over 5 weeks with no additional days being added. Yes, it is a matter of waiting, but no, no apparent system.

Hi Sasha,

I just returned from 22 days in Italy, traveling on a lot of trains. I bought most of them at home before traveling. By memory, after I purchased a ticket, it gave me the option to go to “My Journeys” (I am registered in their system.). In that area, the tickets would be listed with a few icon options listed to the right. One was to open a pdf. I would print those pdfs.

I did buy a couple of tickets with my phone at the hotel and just did a screenshot of my ticket. Both methods worked fine.

One extra thing I do is create a spreadsheet with all of my ticket numbers or PNR codes listed on it. So, if I lost my phone and/or papers, I could still travel.

PNR code that we are supposed to use to pick up out tickets at a self-service machine

Is this an option you are given or you must do it before getting on the EuroCity train?

If you have to, it means that Trenitalia can only sell the foreign company's paper tickets and reserve a seat, but they can't access their e-tickets system.

ps Not all Italian trains are run by Trenitalia and not are called Freccia-something.

Laurel, it must be the German train from Verona to Munich that Sam mentioned, but we are only riding it in Italy, up to Bolzano. I found some information about these EC trains on Man in Seat 61.

https://www.seat61.com/train-travel-in-italy.htm#how-to-use-trenitalia.com

It says we do have to pick up the tickets at a machine in Italy, we can’t get an e-ticket from Trenitalia. He also says NOT to buy this kind of ticket on Trenitalia if the journey starts in Germany or Austria, because you can’t pick up the ticket in those countries with the Trenitalia code. But we aren’t doing that.

Hi Sasha. This is not a change, this has always been the case for certain international trains. But like others have said, easy to print out your tix at any station in Italy; just do it at your convenience the first time you are near a station. Enjoy your trip!
