What if I opt out of first leg of flights?

Award travel flights and I've not yet discussed any options with the airline but here's the situation:

Our original schedule was domestic flight from city A to city B then international flight from city B.

Airline added a short leg so it's now domestic from city A to city X, domestic city X to city B then international from city B.

The added short flight from A to X has a very tight connection ("Please note connection time" is stated on the new schedule)

We often drive to depart from city X so we could do that rather than risk the short connection time (carry on luggage but small plane so it goes underneath and you have to wait on the jetbridge for it to be brought up - eats up more of the brief connection time)

I can redeposit miles and rebook but there is nothing available for X to B then international, nor any other routing that is reasonable. Trip starts mid-August so award seats(business/first) are taken.

What if we just don't show up for that first leg and drive to depart from X? Or do I see if the airline will allow me to drop that first flight so we are flying an amended schedule? Last time I tried something remotely similar to this I was told "you need a bazillion more miles for that routing". But this is just dropping the first leg so I obviously won't know what they'll say until I call.

Any insight, thoughts or experiences?

Many thanks!!!!

I had the identical situation with American a few years ago. I just called AA and they cancelled the first flight. I was also using miles.

DO NOT ATTEMPT.

If you do not show up for the first flight (or any flight except the last flight) all the remaining flights in your itinerary out (and back) will be cancelled.

If you can't change your reservation on line then phone the airline and see what they can do. Airline policies vary. For example American which has "regular" and "web specials" you cannot change "web specials" you can only redeposit the miles and start over.

First, as stated, you will lose all your future flights if you skip any leg.

Since they changed your flights, you have the right to be rebooked. Call the airline reward department. Even if the website says there are no available award seats, the agents can sometimes override that.

I've had this happen to me and I was rebooked on a better flight.

As Estimated Prophet said: Call AA. They will work with you on getting it changed.

Just call the airline. They are usually good about changing it. Not showing up means you won't have a ticket for other legs.

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely call and see what can be done. As always, RS Forum folks are in the know!

Last March I had an award flight on United flying from my home airport - SFO - Frankfurt. With changes in the schedule our 2 hour layover at SFO changed to a 7 hour layover. We decided to rent a car and drive to SFO and fly from there. I called United and they canceled the first leg of the flight. If we had just not shown up until SFO we would have been screwed.
