I have grappled with Rome2Rio, Seat61, and the SBB websites but can't track down a cheaper fare than around $800-$900 return for 3 kids (aged 10,11&13) and I travelling return Paris to either Bern/Basel (destination is Bern but wondering if Basel is cheaper destination cos of TGV?).
Plan is to depart Paris on Sunday pm or Monday am and return to Paris the following Friday am. Eurail will be also very expensive too and I understand doesn't cover TGV, or there's a supplementary payment and no guarantee of booking.
Don't fully understand the Swiss rail passes and if they have any relevance.
Date-wise, it's not until later in the year (November!) but I'm a little planny and just want to get across some of the logistics!
Can anyone please help?
With advance booking (I took a random date mid-June) the SNCF site (www.sncf.com/) quotes EUR 440 for the four of you, leaving Paris early evening (around 18.30) on a Sunday and leaving Bern Friday morning (around 09.00).
Thank you. After posting my question I did discover SNCF as well and also got good fares. not sure how i'd missed that one! Cheers
perhaps it will be cheaper to book Paris-Basel return, while for leg Basel-Bern-Basel just use Swiss supersaver tickets.
maybe if you give your date, it will be possible to say more
