Welcome Pickups Athens – 6 Bookings, We Won’t Use Them Again

We have just returned from three weeks in Greece and, after six separate bookings with Welcome Pickups, we won’t use them again.

To be fair, several of our drivers were good and our final driver was excellent — professional, communicative, courteous, clean car and exactly the experience we thought we were paying for.

Unfortunately, the service was simply too inconsistent.

The experience that finally lost us as customers was our second-last airport pickup in Athens.

We had paid a premium for what we understood to be a meet-and-greet airport transfer. Instead, there was nobody waiting for us in arrivals with our name.

After collecting our luggage, we ended up outside the terminal trying to locate our driver at the kerb. At one point, another person even attempted to take the vehicle we believed was ours.

We eventually completed the transfer, but it left us asking a pretty simple question:

What exactly had we paid the premium for?

If we have to collect our luggage, walk outside the terminal and locate a car ourselves, we can simply use the official taxi rank or Uber.

What really disappointed us was Welcome Pickups’ response afterwards.

I contacted them and asked for a refund for the meet-and-greet service that hadn’t been delivered as expected. Instead, we were offered a €10 credit toward a future Welcome Pickups booking.

We explained that we live in Australia, this was our first trip to Greece and we are unlikely to return for at least 12 months. A €10 future credit wasn’t a meaningful resolution for us.

Ironically, our sixth and final transfer was excellent. That driver delivered exactly the service we had expected from Welcome Pickups from the outset.

And that’s really our issue: consistency.

After six bookings, this isn’t a conclusion we’ve reached based on one driver or one bad day. We gave the service a fair run during our trip.

For future airport transfers, we’ll use the official taxi rank or Uber where available rather than paying a premium for a meet-and-greet service that, in our experience, isn’t consistently delivered.

Six bookings were enough for us.

Sorry to hear you didn't get the service you wanted.

I've used Welcome Pickups in Athens a couple of times. The first time was arriving in Athens. My flight was nearly an hour early. Immigration was empty and I arrived at the pickup point 45 minutes before the scheduled time. I didn't expect the driver to be there that early. (They are taxi drivers and don't make any money standing arround.)

About 15 minutes later I got a call from him saying he saw the flight was early and was on his way to the terminal. He shortly arrived and escorted me out to the car.

He was fluent in English, very clean car, had wifi on board and even had a cold bottle of water for me.

I've only used them once so I can't speak about consistency, but my experience in Mexico City in February is similar to yours. From my Trip Report;

I booked it instead of a taxi because the website promised I’d be met in the terminal by my English-speaking driver holding a sign with my name. It turns out he didn’t speak a lick of English-which was fine, but he also didn’t meet me in the terminal and instead texted me to go to door 8 and he’d meet me there. 2am in a strange city with a reputation (unfair) for being scary…I wasn’t pleased. I contacted the company the next day that I could have paid Uber half the cost and got the same service. As of this writing I have not heard back. I won’t recommend them.

Still haven't heard back.

We had a bad experience with them also. We ordered a pick up from the airport in Paris to our hotel. We texted them from the airport in NY that our flight was 1 hour delayed. No problem they texted back. When we got off our flight, no driver with our name on a sign. We called the company, they cancelled us because we were late and didn’t have another driver to send, we got an €85 credit. We did use the credit (not the full amount) to go to the train station. We wouldn’t use them again. There are too many other companies who are more reliable.

I was thinking about using them once, but I found multiple negative posts in a variety of places, so... I didn't use them.

My Welcome Pickups to the Athens cruise port went well. The cab I picked up for the return after the cruise was a crook, trying to charge 150 Euro.

I agree there is a problem with consistency using WelcomePickups. Sometimes great, sometimes lacking. It definitely doesn't feel like a premium service. I don't use them as much as I used to, and I don't recommend them anymore.

I never use these overpriced transfers unless its an exorbitant distance. For instance my Folks and I took a cruise out of Dover and we were in London and on the return booked a flight from Gatwick to Paris because there was no Eurostar at Ashford in 2022. I found a reasonable taxi service and we were taken in Mercedes Sprinter Vans. It was $250 for 3 all in for all rides and the driver explained the history along the way. I am so glad we took this option due to traffic Early in the morning to get to a railway station.

It we are in a city and the airport is 5 miles away and I can get a taxi or Uber for 15 EUR vs $100 car service I am taking the taxi. If its 1-2 hours a car service becomes worth it.

When we go to SFO we have a driver who I hire privately from the Silicon Valley and he tracks the flight and pulls up to the curb on arrival no Uber or Lyft garages. He on departure pulls up to the curb. Forc$70 each way he does a great job. I found him on Nextdoor and his Wife worked at the local High school I attended. We trust him and he is always timely. Were friends and my Mom needed a last minute trip and he was available.
