Wegen to Lucerne--Train to Rothenberg Germany?--Car rental Question

We will be leaving Wengen in Late June and Plan to spend a couple of days in Rothenber Germany, if we can get a train from Lucerne. We then plan to rent a car , tour the Romantic Road and the Rhinelandfor 4- 5 days then Fly out of Rankfurt. Does this eem logical, or should we rent a car in Lucerne and take off from there? Thanks for any help. Dennis

The fastest train route from Wengen to Rothenburg bypasses Lucerne. If you book far enough ahead (up to 92 days allowed) on the German Rail site, www.bahn.de, you can get a Europa-Spezial Schweiz fare as low as 39 EUR.

Note: On the DB site correct spelling and the complete name is important. It's Rothenburg, not Rothenberg. There are several towns named Rothenburg in Germany. The one I assume you want is Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

If you're going to stop in Lucerne, buy your Wengen-Luzern (Lucerne) tickets in Wengen. According to the Swiss Rail site, the standard 2nd class fare is 43.20 CHF (about 29 EUR). If you book Luzern-Rothenburg ob der Tauber on the DB site, you can get the same 39 EUR Europa-Spezial Schweiz fare as the one offered for Wengen-Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The allotted number of discount fare tickets sell out fast so book ASAP.

After you get summary timetables for Wengen-Rothenburg ob der Tauber or Luzern-Rothenburg ob der Tauber, click on the arrow to the left of each departure time to see the connecting points.
