We are flying to Rome on Air Berlin connecting in Berlin from JFK

We are flying to FCO (Rome) from JFK on Air Berlin. We are connecting in the new Berlin airport on June 5/6. Our connection time is about 90 minutes so I was curious about the following: Since we are on Air Berlin all the way from JFK to FCO, I am assuming our bags will be checked through to FCO. However, will we have to pick our bags in BER and re-check to go through customs in Berlin? Also, will we have to go through customs and immigration in Berlin or Rome? Obviously all of this affects our chances of making our connection with ease, so I am curious to hear if we have to wait for baggage claim or not in Berlin. Thanks!

Both Germany and Italy are Schengen countries so on arrival in Berlin you will go through Immigration/Passport control then on to your connecting flight. Your bags will be checked through to Rome, so no need to wait for bags. In Rome you will retrieve your bags, Customs in much of Europe is a non-issue, as you are exiting the secure area, if you have something to declare, you seek out the customs officials, otherwise just exit.
