We will be arriving in Warnemunde by cruise shop on June 23, 2009. We want to go to Berlin on our own - even if only for a few hours, and get a Hop-on Hop-off bus for an overview. Are the train connections feasible and should we purchase tickets in advance? Also, any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Because of the train travel time involved, you'll want to study the train schedules you can generate at this website http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml so that you know your options. The fastest station to station times are 2hrs 45 mins but of course to this you must add the time to get from this ship to the train station, wait for the train, and the same thing on the Berlin end.
We did the Berlin trip as an excursion set up by the ship. It was expensive but worth it to us as we had not been to Berlin since the days of the Wall and wanted to see all the changes. Also my brother was married there while in the army.
It is a long train ride but it was very well organized including snacks on the train and a nice lunch in Berlin. We saw a lot and never would have managed all of this on our own.
