Want to see/tour Amalfi Coast by bus after cruiseship stops at Naples

In May our cruiseship stops at Naples on a fri from 7AM to 6PM. We are wanting to tour the Amalfi Coast. After we leave the ship should we get to Sorrento preferably by train and then catch a bus there? How far along should we go (last time was a ship bus tour from Naples to Amalfi and back)? How best to get back to our ship at Naples at least by 5PM.

It would be best to hire a driver for the day. They can be a little pricey, but so is a car rental...and you don't know where you are going. They can pick you up in Naples at the cruise ship dock and drive you down the coast and then back over the mountains to stop in Pompeii. Here are a few websites. Others are available I'm certain. Google is a wonderful thing! Do your research.

I've rented a car and driven the road. It's really fun if you are a careful, yet aggressive driver. No room for the meek! Tour buses pass literally within an inch of the side of your car. We had to hug a cliffside, pull in the mirrors, and pull out the rabbit's feet.

By all means, take the Circumvesuviana [sp?]train from Naples to Sorrento; you have lots of choices from there. If you are a bit adventurous, rent a scooter or two in Sorrento. See Rick's Italy guidebook for info. It's the best view of all; you can't really see much from a tour bus and a scooter is much easier to herd around the curves than a car and a lot more fun! Just watch out for buses the size of small cruiseships which, as John from Dallas said, tend to take up the whole road.

You'll be pushing it a bit to see the Amalfi Coast from Naples. I'm sure that whatever can be reasonably done will be offered by the ship at a very steep price. On your own, it could take you up to two hours to get from the ship to Sorrento (the Circumvesuviana train takes just over an hour). From there, you can take the SITA bus down the coast or, rent a motor scooter. If you rent the motor scooter, you better be good at it. The road south on the coast can be quite crowded and you haven't seen the Italian drivers yet. For returning, I would definitely depart Sorrento no later than 2:30pm-3:00pm. Hopefully, you are closer in a place such as Pompei.

I wish to thank all those who offered assistance ... we will probably go with our ship's Amalfi bus tour. Thanks again ... John
