We are planning a train ride from Dusseldorf (or thereabouts) to Milan and wanted to know if the train will allow us views of castles along the Rhine -- I read somewhere that a few years back there was a change in the rail line so the views may not be what they were pre 2000. Thanks

It just depends on how you ticket the trip. There is now a high speed ICE line from Köln direct to Frankfurt airport, and ICEs will take that route, bypassing the Rhein.
You want to select a route with an IC from Köln to Mannheim (probably) that goes via Koblenz.
On the Bahn webpage, select Duesseldorf to Milan and select Koblenz as the via (no stopover time necessary). That should put you on the line that goes up the left bank of the Rhein from Koblenz to Bingen through Boppard, St. Goar, and Bacharach.
